    • One of the most famous early family members was John Crabbe (fl.1305-1352), a Flemish merchant, pirate and soldier. He defended Berwick Castle for the Scots against English forces in 1318, but after being captured by the English in 1332, he then assisted the English when they again besieged at Berwick in 1333. As an engineer, he was in charge of the siege machine, causing "sore problems" for the English defenders of the Castle. In that year, the Count of Flanders committed to the King that if he caught John Crabbe he would hang him for 'murder'. However, this same John Crabbe was a much sought after commander, and King Robert the Bruce rewarded him with lands in Auchmolen, Auchterrony, and Prescoby, for his services with his siege machine. In 1332, John Crabbe also assisted Bruce in the siege of Perth. The same person became high on the political scale of the Scottish nation, and his sept branched into many directions. He treated with the English for the release of Earl David of Huntingdon, and ultimately obtained his release for him to become King David of Scotland. The name flourished for the next few centuries on their many estates.

    edit

You don't mind all the EOTW nominations I've made in the past month or so, do you? I'm assuming that you're okay with it because you say "thank you" each time a nomination is moved to accepted, but I just wanted to make sure. Clovermoss (talk) 04:06, 28 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Absolutely OK. I love it when the Queue is two/three months ahead. Yours are always well researched and written. Welcome Aboard!!! ―Buster7  07:08, 28 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
I haven't written any in awhile because the queues been pretty full lately. Anyways, I have a few people in mind for when the queue does get low. If you're running low on nominations, feel free to ping me or leave a message on my talk page anytime. Clovermoss (talk) 01:51, 18 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
Great. A pleasure not to have to worry. I'll be in touch. ―Buster7  06:33, 18 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

    Coincidence

    edit

Fascinating how this nomination has come up right after the editor's request for adminstrative privileges ended and is currently under deliberation by the bureaucrats... No matter how it turns out, a little thank you from other editors is surely welcome at this moment in time. isaacl (talk) 18:02, 22 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

I thought the timing was probably the most interesting coincidence ever. Anyways, I'm glad that I got to express my thanks (even if I technically wrote it weeks ago). I missed his RfA and would've supported based off the phenomenal CCI work. Clovermoss (talk) 04:20, 24 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
I agree. Never happened B4. A very unexpected connection for the Award and his attaining the Mop simultaneously. EotW seems to be going unnoticed which I can understand. ―Buster7  20:45, 24 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
By the way, could you fix this [1]? I would do it myself if I could, but I can't figure out how to edit the template. Clovermoss (talk) 00:01, 26 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

    Trump presidency timelines

    edit

Hi Buster7. For some time now, I have been mulling over nominating some of the earlier timelines (particularly the ones from 2017/2018) for a featured list review. What do you think of this? Also, your talk page is getting rather long. Might want to consider archiving some of it.
    Thanks. Mgasparin (talk) 02:19, 27 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

    A little help?

    edit

Hi Buster7, I need a little help. A New Page Reviewer has been bugging me for some time about the 2020 Q2 timeline of Trump's presidency, and has nominated the page for speedy deletion under A3 (empty page w/no content) for CSD. Would you mind backing me up here? The timeline doesn't start until April 1 (there is no way the timeline can have content as April 1 hasn't even started yet), and I would rather not have to contest the deletion at this time. Thank you so much for your help. Mgasparin (talk) 00:09, 1 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

    Never mind, it's been resolved. Mgasparin (talk) 03:18, 1 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Mgasparin: Yes, I saw the minor kerfuffle in progress. That is when I made that "undo" editing mistake the other day. I was about to comment but then thought.."Why escalate into a battle what seems to be on the road to being resolved?" I would have commented that it was much ado about nothing (by the other editor) and he should just "bridle his pony" and wait a day or two. Isn't there a slang term from Freudian psychoanalysis that describes someone "who pays such attention to detail that it becomes an obsession" and goes around here and there and does things that may be an annoyance to others? Something to do with early toilet training. Anyway, Happy April Fools Day. I hope your sheltering-in-place is going well. ―Buster7  07:06, 1 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I agree. Editors with pedantic or overly dogmatic behaviour do drive me insane. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ I did ask that in the spirit of IAR he leave it alone, but to no avail. Ah well, it's over now. There is no "shelter-in-place" here in BC, but there the government here does ask that people stay indoors as much as possible. I really can't wait for this social distancing ordeal to be over. Getting back to routine will be nice, once it happens.   Mgasparin (talk) 08:03, 1 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

    Attention Shoppers!!!

    edit

Over 350 individual editors have received an EDDY award. This week the 150 members of the Wikipedia:WikiProject COVID-19 have been chosen as recipients. In the past, some of you have visited the recipients talk page and offered your congratulations and your personal "pat on the back for a job well done". Well!!! This week you can thank 150 editors all at the same time and place. Let's reach out to this Associate Project and thank them for their efforts and their high standards of expectations from each other. Editing these type of "Hot Topic" articles is not for the meek and mild as we all know. Please take a second and reach out to them. ―Buster7  16:47, 2 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Editor of the Week : nominations needed!

    edit

The Editor of the Week initiative has been recognizing editors since 2013 for their hard work and dedication. Editing Wikipedia can be disheartening and tedious at times; the weekly Editor of the Week award lets its recipients know that their positive behaviour and collaborative spirit is appreciated. The response from the honorees has been enthusiastic and thankful.

The list of nominees is running short, and so new nominations are needed for consideration. Have you come across someone in your editing circle who deserves a pat on the back for improving article prose regularly, making it easier to understand? Or perhaps someone has stepped in to mediate a contentious dispute, and did an excellent job. Do you know someone who hasn't received many accolades and is deserving of greater renown? Is there an editor who does lots of little tasks well, such as cleaning up a citation.

Please help us thank editors who display sustained patterns of excellence, working tirelessly in the background out of the spotlight, by submitting your nomination for Editor of the Week today! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 23:50, 26 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

    Help please

    edit

Buster could you help me write up a request for EoftheW for User:Ozzie10aaaa. We worked together as co-editors for the West Africa Ebola article and I know that he works with and contributes to our medical articles with, I think, one GA article. I know that there is a way to bring up an editors main works page, but I don't know how to do it. Buster, I just have to say that if WP (and the world) had more goodhearted editors such as this one we would all be a lot happier. He has just been such a joy to work with. Gandydancer (talk) 16:22, 8 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Will do this week sometime and then send it back to you to add your 2cents and then for you to nominate.. Although your last nomination was one of the BEST. Hope all is well, Proud of America and the World for the 2 weeks of peaceful protests. Looting was minimal, even in the beginning, when compared to the outpouring of support and goodwill. The cats out of the bag
Well it looks like the cat is out of the bag on this one!--I never dreamed that Ozzie had your page on his watch list.. Now as for your fine compliment, I wish I could see myself that way. Perhaps I am better than I think but I truly have to work very hard with my edits/wording and am ever so grateful that we have a fine copy editor that is interested in many of the same articles that I work on and follows me around. So anyway, I'm not anything special as an editor and neither is Ozzie. But there is more to this place than being able to write the best copy and that is knowing how to work with others and create a joyful atmosphere to work in. That is a real talent and one that Ozzie excels in. Gandydancer (talk) 16:07, 9 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
Looks to me like you just wrote the highlights of his nomination. All we need to do is a little research, see what others (aside from ourself) say about him, find a few appropriate adjectives and "Bob's yer Uncle. I just love Bob's your uncle. I use it whenever possible. Of course here in the States I get the strangest of looks and comments. But that's all right.
Above you ask about an editors work page and how to bring it up. Go to a User page. Any non-IP User page. Click on "User Contributions" in the menu on the left. Go to the bottom of the page and click "Edit count". Again, Bob's your uncleBuster7  21:08, 9 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
    Is that your Cat?―Buster7  21:09, 9 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
OK, I checked it out and am not sure about this copy: This quote from his page says it all: There is more to this place than being able to write the best copy and that is knowing how to work with others and create a joyful atmosphere to work in.Gandydancer (talk) This is not from my talk page nor is it from his. Also, about the "he doesn't do drama" bit, actually while that is true he is the first one to offer an opinion or support when it is asked for. I have seen this again and again that he brings issues to the Med discussion page and offers his stand at AfCs. So, all in all, I think it best to just skip that. (Re the cat, more later but no it's not mine though it looks about as mad as my beloved and now deceased Ruffie must have been after all that I put her through.) Gandydancer (talk) 16:37, 10 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
OK..I'll make the changes you suggest. No prob. But...you should know that when I find an editor with 75% of their efforts devoted to creating and molding articles and under 10% of their edits on talk pages I know that they do not engage in arguing etc. They are to busy working. But its just a personal little comment I like to make when I can for effect. I'll check on where i saw the quote. Is it on his User page???―Buster7  22:43, 10 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
I couldn't disagree more. For example there is a discussion going on right now at the Abortion article, an article that I've worked on for many years. I've spent hours and hours reading and discussing at that article about the wording for the lead--we are talking about just a few words here, not some big change. The last big blowup was several years ago but it goes on all the time. It is easy enough to sit back and say "I agree with xxx" and then you could say oh look low talk page edit count! But how difficult it is to wade in and present one's thoughts and the reasons behind those thoughts. And then reading pages and pages of the thoughts of others, and then responding to them. And on and on. It is hell. But if editors do not constantly work on that article (and many, many such articles) the so-called pro lifers would rob women of their right to choose in a heartbeat. And people do quote Wikipedia to back up their arguments. I know that before the last big lead change (though it was only a few words, if that) Catholics and other religious groups had been using our article to back their position. I for one call those editors that use our talk pages to argue article content the backbone of and hope for the accuracy of our project. I do not mean to criticize Ozzie for not taking part in the discussions--he is better at other ways to help this project. We are all different with different talents. Gandydancer (talk) 23:37, 10 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
Sorry Gandy but you misinterpret my Use of the word Drama. Lets stick w/ Ozzie as my example of what I mean when I say "No Drama here". When you go to page and scroll down you'll see a big circle segmented into "namespace totals" for the editors work which is displayed in percentages. When I am vetting an editor for the award, one of the more important things I look for is where is the editor spending their time. Are they working or are they talking? 80,368 of Ozzies 104,458 total edits are to articles or 76.9%. Article talk, user talk and other user talk amount to about 15%. I think high talk percentages are a clue to lots of chatter, lots of over-discussing. So... its just a clue or a hint (to me) that someone like Ozzie does not spend a lot of energy arguing. Or, to use my words, doesnt spend their time creating "drama". I could be wrong about using the percentages as a barometer...that's always a possibility. But I think the NameSpace Totals give me a window into the work habits of an editor that, most of the time, I know very little about other than what the nominator and perhaps seconds tell me.
Please don't get me wrong Gandy. I'm not saying you're wrong about blow-ups and draw-out discussions that happen all the time especially at "Hot" articles and topics. Remember: I cut my teeth at Sarah Palin in 2008 and worked with you at the various BP oil spill articles. You mention the Abortion article above and how OZ doesn't contribute to the battle to add (or remove) stuff. Maybe that is not his forte'. Like you say we are all different with different talents. Be Safe. Wear a Mask. See ya on the other side of this virus thing. ―Buster7  05:53, 11 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
Buster, thanks for the explanation and I do understand, however I think we still may tend to disagree. For example in the many controversial articles on Trump, editor SPECIFICO writes thousands of talk page words using WP policy links to demonstrate things that I am in total agreement with but am not such a policy expert. She only very seldomly adds article page edits. But I am eternally grateful that at AfCs and such I can just say "per xxx and xxx". Like you, I don't like to argue and will only do it when I have no choice. At any rate, I do tend to bristle when an editor talks about TP edits as though they are not a good thing (though I understand that I did not exactly understand your position). Anyway, moving forward here's the deal on Ozzie: He knows how to cooperate. Ozzie and I worked together on the Ebola article and he did all the looking for new information and he posted it to the article. He didn't go to the talk page and ask for "permission", and why should he? We had both become experts of a sort on Ebola. But on the other hand I felt completely free to reword some of his edits and regularly pare off old information to make room for the new--and I didn't ask TP or Ozzie's permission either... So that is what I mean--his ego is strong enough that he does not feel a need to defend his every edit and is able to work with others for the benefit of the project. Like you Buster, he is not Mr.macho and that's a good thing. Gandydancer (talk) 18:37, 12 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
Gandy. Thanks for the reply and the added info about Ozzie. I'll work it into his Nom. Always a pleasure to chat!―Buster7  00:08, 17 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Questionable edit at Trump presidency timelines

    edit

I'm in two minds about this edit. It changes this edit by me which asserted that Biden won the election. This is what RS are saying, and only fringe media sites like the Daily Wire or Breitbart are saying otherwise. Sure, if you want to delve into semantics, Biden has not truly won yet as the EC hasn't met. Are we playing to the Trump supporters by saying that Biden is only projected to win by MSM or should we dispense with the fine print and just say he won? Mgasparin (talk) 03:26, 13 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

    • Currently, when our reader comes for knowledge about the daily "Who won?" situation, the timeline hints at the ambiguity of the declaration. Soon president-elect Biden will be officially declared as the 46th President. I suggest we wait a bit and let the ambiguity linger. I debate with myself about mentioning the Administrations stance on "the transition" and "the daily intelligence briefings" and the blatant disregard for normalcy. But that can come after the Biden Administration is 100% official...which should be soon. Fingers and toes crossed. ―Buster7  12:29, 13 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Pinging @Mgasparin Monitoring the various presidential timeline articles since 2008 has required reverting the occasional (what I felt were...) unconstructive edits that were made to them. Preventing WP:Bloat was always my concern. I never intend to deterred other editors from editing the timelines constructively as long as the descriptive texts remained brief and concise. At times the descriptive texts are used to allow political bias to "creep" into a timeline. I readily admit my own bias but do my utmost to contain it. I guess I just needed to say this somewhere and a user's own talk page is always the best place for that type of admission.―Buster7  16:54, 24 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I get that. Political articles are difficult because we all have our own ideas and feelings about Person X, either positive or negative. Deterring newer editors has never been my goal either, but it does sometimes happen on articles that concern persons who are controversial. You either love or hate Trump; there seems to really be no other option. This really makes it difficult for a lot of people to write about him in an objective manner and keeping their personal feelings about him off Wikipedia. Buster,

Feeing quite elated tonight. I hope I’m correct, but I do believe I’ve found out Gandy alive and well. I pinged you to her new account - looks like she got locked out of her Gandy account or something. My heart is soaring. It was a dull ache that didn’t dissipate with time since losing her so many months ago.

Secondly, how beautiful this is, and what a beautiful person you are for posting it to your homepage. I am so glad to know you. ~ Sarah petrarchan47คุ 03:30, 20 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Really GREAT news. But I don't think I got the ping. Can you try again? The above quote was a holiday gift years ago by User:Zaereth who shared editing time with Gandy and many others at the Sarah Palin article back in 2008. Sorry you didn’t get the ping, it’s from the talk page of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/208.117.88.196 - at the bottom of Gandy’s talk page is a section titled “The Waltz”. I looked the contribs of the IP (linked above) and it’s Gandy, judging by articles and timing. If she wanted to make a clean break for whatever reason, I respect that, I’m just elated that she isn’t missing any longer!
I am ever grateful to be your wiki friend too. You’re my anchor to all that was good about editing here. And I’m sure this is true for countless other editors, Buster. Big hugs to you and your wife ~ Happy Thanksgiving!🍽🦃🍖🙏 ~ petrarchan47คุ 17:09, 23 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

The fact that you (and others) took your time to purge this dark cloud from my history is a kindness. The opening of the investigation by the complaining editor was a retaliatory act meant to dissuade me from editing. Thankfully it did not work. ―Buster7  14:23, 17 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
It was my pleasure! :) I enjoy being able to clear up people's records and allow them to have a clean record.
If it makes matters more funny, or interesting, or flat out confusing, we have a CCI under the name of "Buster40004" and somehow, despite 4 and 7 being far apart, I misclicked onto it plenty when searching for the CCI title. That's not even the worst, when there's stuff like "20151115" due to our date formatting. Sennecaster (Chat) 04:53, 18 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week in recognition of your great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Soni submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I remember when we started Editor of the Week, We had bright shining eyes and an enthusiasm to make a positive impact on WikipediaWorld. Almost a full decade has passed, and I recently dropped by the Editor Retention Project only to notice Buster7 (talk · contribs · count · logs) still holding this little niche project of ours together through sheer will and dedication. Hundreds of users and editors have felt personally recognised and better due to Buster's efforts, and surely dozens have continued to edit (or increased their editing) solely because Buster was one of the people to notice they deserved a little recognition. As far as I can tell, he himself has never been nominated for this, simply because of how much of a one-man-army he has been through the last 8 years of Eddy, just keeping up nominations, posting, and keeping regular tabs on every aspect of this Wikiproject, all by himself. More than that, he's a tireless contributor to all of Wikipedia, not just WikiProject Editor Retention or Editor of the Week, with edits spanning back 14 consistent years now. No wonder it seems like he is forever present, making good solid contributions wherever he goes. I can think of no person more deserving of praise for this. This nomination was seconded by User:Eddie891, User:Gog the Mild, User:Theleekycauldron, User:Panini, User:Sennecaster, User:L235, User:Worm That Turned, User:John Cline, User:Nosebagbear, User:Tuckerlieberman and User:Isaacl

    Editor of the Week

    edit

I recently learned about this great initiative. Now that I know of it, I can think of about 5 to 10 editors who I think deserve it. My reading of the situation is that there is not a lot of nominations. Would you consider it a helpful or an unhelpful thing for me to nominate so many? Any advice on that is welcome. CT55555(talk) 14:48, 18 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks so much for offering your involvement. Your recent nomination was splendid. The process is simple. The nominations "sit" at the Nomination page for a short period waiting for possible "seconds and thirds". After a week or two I move them to the Accepted Nominations page where they join the queue awaiting the awarding process. At the moment I am just ready to award the first in line this afternoon which will leave 6 nominations; 4 of which I nominated, and your nomination is currently the last in line. 6 in line is a good margin. It relieves the stress of ME having to find a good candidate. I much prefer that working editors nominate the fellow editors that they see in action, doing whatever it is they do to improve the encyclopedia and the arena we work in. I, myself, have a "back-up" list of editors I consider when the line gets too short. If the Queue gets too long, the day of awarding gets too far removed from the initial nomination. I rarely insert an editor into the head of the line except if the nomination is of a timely nature. It doesn't happen often, but then I'm the only one here. Welcome aboard! Check out the Hall of Fame and the Recipient response pages. We started this process of awarding Eddies back in January of 2013. I consider it my legacy. I am open to any assistance you might provide.―Buster7  16:45, 18 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. So what I'm taking from that is that I should nominate a small handful, wait a few weeks, see what the backlog is at, and then add if the backlog remains single digit? CT55555(talk) 16:48, 18 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Right. Lets say "4" is the lowest we want in the queue Also, you might consider visiting the Editor of the Week's talk page the day or two after to offer congratulations. I think it adds mutual participation by the editors that know the recipient. ―Buster7  17:20, 18 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
I was just following your advice about pages to review and I noticed that nomination 484 won before in 2022. I was not aware of that when I nominated. Is that a problem? CT55555(talk) 06:16, 22 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
It would not be the first time an editor would receive a second EDDY but this time period is rather short...only a few months. I think it would be best if we remove the nom from accepted for the time being. Good catch. ―Buster7  17:14, 22 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
On a minor terminology note: typically I wouldn't refer to someone who received the Editor of the Week recognition as someone who "won". The idea is that it's a low-key pat on the back (though still a tangible connection between someone who recognizes the recipient's good work and the recipient, which is always gratifying). isaacl (talk) 17:34, 22 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

    • Shakespeare's phrase "hoist with his own petard"—meaning that one could be lifted (blown) upward by one's own bomb, or in other words, be foiled by one's own plan—has become an idiom that means "to be harmed by one's own plan (to harm someone else)" or "to fall into one's own trap".

Thanks for your message. The first place I believe our paths crossed was on the talk page for the article for Tim Raines (which, interestingly, is still the most recent non-bot posted thread on that talk page). This talk page is the first (and sadly not the last) place where I experienced the frustration of being unable to attract others to comment on a disagreement, and thus having the dispute frozen in time, awaiting some future person to do something. As a result, I was a bit wary during our discussion, but happily we were able to communicate effectively and amicably. If everyone were as collaborative as you, I might be a more regular contributor today. I appreciate your dedication at chipping in to support Wikipedia's mission in whatever way you can. Best wishes during this time of reflection and celebration with family and friends, and good luck for the new year! isaacl (talk) 16:11, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Buster, I just want to thank you again for the EotW nomination in 2023. I will forever cherish that moment and the words written. When I say "Be a Rainbow" it comes from Maya Angelou's writing's on how we can be impactful in our neighbor's life. You and the others who supported my nomination are definitely a bright Rainbow in my sky for that thing that seems so simple to many yet has so much depth to a perceptible person. As I go on winter break soon (end of Jan) I want to wish you a great 2024 and peaceful springtime. I hope to return then and listen to your Song again. --ARoseWolf 17:04, 4 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

    "Formerly x name"

    edit

    Hey Buster,

I noticed that one user in the list at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week#Recipients of Editor of the Week aka The Eddy has (formerly x name) next to their name. I noticed there's a lot of users listed by their former name on there, would you be okay with me updating the names on the list where appropriate to their current names, while noting their past one? I'd leave out instances where a user has vanished of course. I'm suggesting this because it'll become easier to search if an editor has already received the award. Additionally, I like the idea that it properly recognizes the user by a name that some may be more familiar with. Hey man im josh (talk) 20:53, 29 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sure Josh. I see no problem with the change you suggest. I'm gonna @Isaacl:, the co-clerk, to be sure we are all on the same wavelength. Buster Seven Talk (UTC) 22:37, 29 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Sure, no problem, I'm not rushed. Just thought it might be a helpful change and I appreciate feedback :) Hey man im josh (talk) 22:38, 29 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
(pondering emoji) I'm a bit uncertain, because I'm not sure what the recipient would prefer, which will probably depend on why they changed their user name. I'm not sure it's important enough to bother asking them, though, so my initial thought is to leave it as is. isaacl (talk) 22:57, 29 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Yes. I will do that. I have noticed that in most of the interviews about the duo, Rapp-Rovan does most of the talking ...but I get the idea and will pursue that. Thanks Buster Seven Talk (UTC) 22:04, 8 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

    Nominations

    edit

Hey Buster. Hope it's not a problem, but this week I worked on a list of users I want to nominate for EotW. I've nominated 5 of them so far, but I have a further 18 on my list. Hope this isn't a problem, but I thought I'd mention it due to a backlog / queue that it may create. Hey man im josh (talk) 22:10, 29 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Right...thanks a lot for the foresight and for your participation at Editor Retention. What we need to consider is other editors that may want to nominate someone. We need to leave them room. If we load up the queue too much it will be Christmas before their nom gets his/her "pat on the back". There are 14 in line: we are good till at least May. Buster Seven Talk (UTC) 22:33, 29 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough. I do have two I'd like to tack on though if that's okay, one already written. I can hang tight though if you feel at all strongly about it. Hey man im josh (talk) 22:43, 29 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Fair is fair. The Accepted Noms are like a pot of stew. Lots of chefs want to add their ingredients to the pot. If you and I fill up the pot, there's no room for other chefs. Buster Seven Talk (UTC) 22:52, 29 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

    Senior Wikipedians

    edit

WikiProject Wikipedians aged 70 and older has been inactive for some time. The following three proposals may help invigorate this project.

    1. Change the name of this project to WikiProject Senior Wikipedians.[a]
    2. Open membership in this project to users who are at least 60 years of age and have made at least 50 edits in the past year.[b]
    3. Open supporting membership in this project to users who are less than 60 years old but have made at least 50 edits in the past year and support the goals of this project.[c]

    Suggested goals for this project:

    1. To support collaboration and communication among members for the advancement and improvement of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia movement.
    2. To encourage older people, retired people, and soon-to-be-retired people to participate in Wikipedia both for the advancement of the encyclopedia and for their own personal enjoyment.
    3. To encourage older people to share their experience and expertise for the improvement of Wikipedia.
    4. To encourage older users to use their experience and expertise to help younger and less experienced users.
    5. To encourage participation in local and regional Wikimedia events.
    6. To sponsor Wikipedia meetings and classes at places where older people gather.
    7. To advocate for the elimination of ageism and sexism in Wikipedia and the Wikimedia movement.

    Notes

    1. ^ The current name of this project, WikiProject Wikipedians aged 70 and older, is somewhat cumbersome and excludes participation by any users under the age of 70 years.
    2. ^ This current minimum age limit of this project is 70 years. A minimum age limit of 60 years should permit the participation of most retired users. The minimum activity level of 50 edits per year is arbitrary. A minimum activity level indicates continued interest. Members who do not meet the minimum activity level shall be moved to inactive status. Members who have died shall be moved to memorial status.
    3. ^ A new class of Supporting Members allows those users under 60 years to support the goals of the project. Users approaching the age of 60 years may wish to become supporting members in anticipation of reaching the minimum age limit for members.

Please add your suggestions for this project at Senior Wikipedians. Thank you,  Buaidh  talk e-mail 01:15, 10 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

If you don't wish to receive any further information about Senior Wikipedians, please remove your username from our notice list. Thanks.

There is a debate among "The bearded ones" about what to call ourselves. Most prefer "Senior" as in Senior Care Facility or Senior discount. I prefer "Elder" as in "I have been here a while and I know what the Fukumi'doing. Now get off my lawn your little rugrats!", "Elder" demands respect. "Elder" says to all that are paying attention, "The mud at the bottom of my cloak has been achieved by slopping thru the droppings and bile of many a conflict but here I stand ready to defend my WP". "Elder" says, ""I may take a break under that Mighty Oak over there and I may fall asleep, and dream of days gone by, but I'm not dead". "Senior says, "I better call the cemetery and let them know I'm coming!" Buster Seven Talk (UTC) 10:15, 15 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

    Toby the Cat

    edit

Toby lives outside. He is not homeless as he has many homes he visits throughout the neighborhood. But my building is his base. He once was an inside cat but his owners, tenants of mine, let him out one day, he tasted freedom, and now scorns entering any doorway. He just arrived (at 6AM) to check his dish which another tenant fills daily. Empty! I told him to go catch a city rat and eat it this time instead of dropping it off, decapitated, in my yard. He looked at me and walked away, insulted that I asked him to actually eat his prey. I didn't want to tell Toby that his former mate, Amy, was passing away upstairs. See, the former jerk tenant, that I had to evict for non-payment of rent, had four cats. Toby, his mate Amy, and two of their kittens that were adults. The jerk tenant completely abandoned the three inside cats leaving it to me to call the Anti-Cruelty Society to pick them up for adoption since they were good cats. They came but we only found two. Two weeks later, Amy jumped out of a hide-a-bed we were dismantling for discard and went to hide. For weeks she hid (not to well since we knew where she was) on the enclosed back porch, We LET HER BE, as instructed by the Beatles but she didn't eat food or drink we put out for her. On day she was gone! I left windows open and figured she jumped out one and went to join Toby in the Great Outdoors. Sadly that was not the case. A few days ago, my first floor tenant tells me he has been hearing mice in his bathroom ceiling. Knowing there is an access panel to the 6' foot tub and that I had opened it weeks ago to start a repair that was now on hold, I knew it was Amy. As I write this, Amy is in the throws of death. I can't get to her, poor thing. I dropped some wet food down to her and water but she is comatose...still breathing but barely. If I could I would end her pain but I can't reach her to help. Toby doesn't Know. I haven't told him. Maybe Tommorrow. Buster Seven Talk (UTC) 11:43, 15 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Word. I have emailed you an update. She was a wonderful shy creature that lived in pig sty with a Father and son who claimed to love her and her children. I won't report the details. Toby was lucky and ran away from home. His wife and kids suffered many indignities. Using planters as a litter box is a hint as to the poor care they were provided. Enough said. I will be sure to give Amy a proper burial in the back yard. Toby is a constant daily visitor. He is a great lucky cat. He got away from a prison! Buster Seven Talk (UTC) 06:10, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
    • Amy didn't survive her ordeal. She passed away overnight. Animal Cruelty passed my call on to City Services Who will probably call the second Tuesday of next week. There was not much we could do to help her or ease her suffering. If you can visualize this, she was halfway... under pipes and the floor all under the tub. We scooted food and water, but she never touched it...not for days. She was never socialized to humans and because of that she hid and stayed away. Her chosen hiding place led to her death, so sad, poor little thing. We plan on wrapping her in linen and burying her in the garden. I'm sure Toby will visit. Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Buster7

    edit

For some strange reason, with all that's going on, I find myself reflecting on my request of eleven years ago. But first I want to thank @Go Phightins!: and @AutomaticStrikeout: for their unwavering faith in my abilities to swing the mop and their fantastic support and timely advice at that time. They were right...I would have been a tremendous administrator. In RL, I filled administrative roles in many, many venues. With the Chicago police, with Rotary, with the local library, with the 2010 US Census, as General Manager of busy auto repair shop without any car repair experience (auto damage appraiser at the same time). Also remembered is that I was the altarboy for the Monsignor at the High Mass on Sunday. I was the lieutenant of the crossing guards in Grade School. I had the capacity to start at the "average/bottom" and wind up at the top...or at least close to the top. If you take the time to read the request for administratorship ; you will see that it was one little-minded gnat of an editor, one provocateur with malicious intent, that had it in for me. He threw stones whose ripples reverberated throughout the process and caused others to question my Wikipedia career. My downfall was his prime goal. But, luckily, in the long term, he failed. I'm still here and from the recent support and comments I have received here and elsewhere, I have left a positive effect on hundreds of editors. Because of signs of inactivity at his page and talk, I presume the gadfly has passed away. I might take the time to thank those that supported me and spoke in my behalf. Those were the highlights of the time. The misinterpretations and nastiness, the close-mindedness, the out-right attacks, of the Opposed will probably go ignored. But, I'm glad I didn't make it. My failed attempt led me to Editor of the Week which has been my home, my refuge, for 15 years. One more thing. I am in the best of health for a young gentleman of 78. Some aches and pains, high blood pressure, psoriasis, low grade leukemia. All is good. I'm just reflecting on my successes. The roller coaster of a life well lived. WP has been a big part of my simple pleasures Buster Seven Talk (UTC) 13:07, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

    The Shit Happens T-Shirt Theory

    edit
When you wear a T-Shirt that says,
SHIT HAPPENS, then that's what happens; shit.
    If your T-shirt says,
MIRACLES HAPPEN, then Miracles will happen.
It all depends on your viewpoint.
Some editors wear a T-shirt that says,
DRAMA HAPPENS. So that's what they see; Drama.
But pointing out a problem is not Drama.
And Protecting the Encyclopedia is not Drama.
And Protecting New Users from their own Innocence is not Drama.

I'm not sure if you're asking for the location of the preference where you specify your signature? It is located at Preferences → User profile → Signature.
I see the "B7" in the heading in a sans-serif font which doesn't use old-style numerals, so the tops and bottoms align. Your current signature already specifies a font family to use; you can use the same or similar markup (for example, you might use a <span>...</span> instead of an <em>...</em> element) to set that to whatever font has the desired appearance (though if you want people to see it the way you intend, you should choose a font that is commonly installed by default across different operating systems (Windows, MacOS, iOS/iPadOS, Android, Linux, ...).
A visibility tip: your current signature sets the "color" style property; it's a good idea to also set the "background-color" style property as well, to ensure the two work well together. This is particularly important now with the official dark mode. isaacl (talk) 21:59, 29 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

    September music

Today's story has 3 composers, I couldn't decide for the one on the Main page or the one who didn't make it on his bicentenary, so took both, and the pic has a third. Listen if you have a bit of time. The music, played by the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra in Germany in April 2022, impressed me. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:30, 4 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

    Thanks Gerda...always a pleasure! Buster Seven Talk (UTC) 04:02, 7 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! Happy because my story today is about a Czech mezzo soprano who is mentioned on the Main page on her birthday. --Gerda Arendt (talk)
Today is Schoenberg's 150th birthday! On display, portrayed by Egon Schiele, with a DYK hook from 2010 and another from 2014, about his 40th birthday, appeared on his 140th birthday. - See places for a stunning sunrise, on the day Bruckner's 200th birthday was celebrated (a few days late). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:46, 13 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Gerda. I have been to ONE Opera performance, at the Chicago Lyric Opera House. We saw Turandot. Sad to say, all I remember, is a nice long nap. Buster Seven Talk (UTC) 20:10, 13 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I also saw Turandot and brought it to DYK, - too exciting to sleep, see trailer ;) - reminds me that I wanted to give the soprano an article. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:33, 13 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

    Watching Trump

    edit

This late in the "watching what Trump does" game, anyone that is not convinced of his true character or his presidential legacy is blind and should not be trusted with small children. Or even large children for that matter! Buster Seven Talk (UTC) 12:13, 24 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Lets not forget how he single-handedly turned the simple use of face masks, during a deadly global pandemic, into a partisan wedge issue, costing many people their lives! An accurate count of those that passed due to Trump's misguided announcements is impossible to ascertain with a fixed number...but it's alot! Lets not forget that Trump promoted an inordinate amount of conspiracy theories and made a multitude of false and misleading statements during his campaigns and presidency, to a degree unprecedented in American politics. Buster Seven Talk (UTC) 12:53, 24 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

    Chicago Meetup for Wikidata Day

    edit

Hello! This is User:Luiysia (IRL name is Kelly). My main interests are fashion, music, literature, and history. I am fairly new to Wikipedia editing and I found that there has been very little activity from the Chicago Wikipedia user group since 2020.

I'd like to host a casual meetup in Chicago to celebrate Wikidata Day on Saturday, October 26.

Proposed location is Engine Coffee in the Wicker Park/West Town area, at 11AM.

Here is the official meetup page, where you can add yourself as an attendee.

(If you would prefer not to see messages like this, go ahead and take yourself off this list.)

Hope to see you all there!

    Elder Wikipedians

    WikiProject Elder Wikipedians

My proposal to make extensive changes to WikiProject Wikipedians aged 70 and older was a bust, primarily because many users felt that the term "Senior Wikipedian" implied a higher ranking Wikipedia membership. Therefore, I am making two less ambitious proposals:

Proposal #1. Change the name of "WikiProject Wikipedians aged 70 and older" to "WikiProject Elder Wikipedians".
Proposal #2. Drop the minimum age requirement to 60 years.

Please respond to Elder Wikipedians and let us know what you think of each of these proposals.
    Thank you,  Buaidh  talk e-mail

If you don't wish to receive any further information about Elder Wikipedians, please remove your username from our notice list. Thanks.

    October music

My story today is about a composer and choir conductor, listen to his Lamento. - My story on 13 October was about a Bach cantata. As this place works, it's on the Main page now because of the date (but Bach wrote it for the 20th Sunday, not the Tuesday after the 21st Sunday after Trinity). I sort of like it because today is the birth date of my grandfather who loved and grew dahlias like those pictured. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:21, 22 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

You cause me to remember my grandfather who was a stone mason in the small Belgian community around Stekene, Belgium. Ten years ago I was able to see the beautiful farmer dry-stone walls he constructed in the late 1800's. Buster Seven Talk (UTC) 22:01, 22 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for sharing! - Happy whatever you celebrate today, - more who died, more to come, and they made the world richer. Greetings from Madrid where I took the pic of assorted Cucurbita in 2016. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:50, 31 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Invitation to participate in a research

    edit

    Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

    Kind Regards,

For a surprise, a Bach cantata is on the Main page today, where it was last year for the 300th anniversary, and they were too lazy to find something new ;) - Look at my story, and listen to the 3 whole-tone steps and the dialogues of Fear and Hope. - An open letter open to be signed (more info on the talk), - I haven't checked if you did, please ignore then. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:18, 7 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
