WikiProject:Ocean ...?

edit

As well, I previously indicated my desire to devise a wikiproject (if one doesn't already exist) to standardise information regarding oceans/seas/bodies of water; thanks for your interest. What should it be called ... and bear in mind that it should, perhaps, be entitled something that is inclusive (e.g., lakes):

  • Oceanography
  • Oceans and seas
  • Bodies of water
  • Hydrography
  • Hydrology
  • ?

I know, pretty 'dry' stuff, eh? ;) Get back to me when able. Thanks again! E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 15:54, 7 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Country subdivisions

edit

need your help, kind of urgent, someone wants to split the cats and articles of "subdivisons of XY" to "Administatrive divisions of some countries" and "Political divisions of some other countries".

could you maybe vote on Wikipedia:Categories_for_deletion/Log/2006_April_4#Category:Subdivisions_by_country_to_Category:Political_divisions_by_country (take care, there are actually three votes)

IMO the thing should be taken with more care and discussed on the project page

Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Subnational_entities/Naming#Umbrella_terms

first. It is really is mass rename, since it not only involves the cats and subcates but also lots of articles. As Lorenz pointed out the most important seems to be that we find clear definitions of what the terms mean. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 08:02, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

User:William Allen Simpson mass posted all categories that contained the term "subdivision" at the CfD page. I just did not want that they get deleted only because some people for some minutes think this is good. Some people don't like the term "subdivision", but it has been long time around in WP. E.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Subdivisions_of_Finland&action=history . It's officially used in ISO 3166-2. (I think they are based in Berlin) - so maybe this really is not of North American english origin. (one of several places where William thinks my english is not sufficient: Talk:Administrative division). I could at least convince some people to postpone the rename for now. New Caledonia communes

edit

I finished all the communes of New Caledonia the other day, but haven't found time to send you a message until today. The point of my message is this: it would be great to add to each infobox a map showing the location of the commune in New Caledonia. As an example of what I mean, you can check: Trondheim. I don't have the proper softwares to edit maps at the moment, but if you do maybe you'd be interested in making the maps. The master map you should use is this one: [1]. I think you should draw thicker lines for commune boundaries that are also province boundaries and thiner lines for commune boundaries that are not province boundaries. Also, remember that the commune of Poya is divided between two provinces. This will be no problem: there will be a thick line across that commune, but the commune territory will be in red, so no confusion possible. Alright, so let me know if you're interested and think it feasible. The master map is not best quality, but I don't think it's possible to find anything better. Hardouin 18:14, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

For colors, I think it best to use the same colors as here: red for communes, yellow for land not part of the commune, blue for Ocean. Hardouin 18:16, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

You can just make an empty map if you wish, and then I will color each commune and add the maps to the infoboxes. That I should be able to do with my limited softwares. Hardouin 18:17, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Check La Foa and South Province, New Caledonia, I explained everything there. About the maps, if we change the colors and design, would they still be considered copyrighted? An administrative division in itself is not a copyrighted thing. As a compromise, we could tag the maps as fair use. What do you think? Hardouin 14:52, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

wao - great maps! nevertheless a little comment. IMO PNG is the preferred format and maybe it's better to upload to commons? Best regards Tobias Conradi (Talk) 15:53, 16 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

thx for your reply. I recall there have been patent issues with gif, but step by step, depending on region, the patent expires, so i don't know how current this is. PNG is officially supported by w3-consortium, some claim it's better than gif, but e.g. there are no animated PNGs as there are with gif.
upload to commons has the advantage that all other languages wikipedia can use the images too.
... :-) best regards Tobias Conradi (Talk) 11:17, 18 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for this work, man! I was looking at Italy and I assume the numbering of the regions is according to the alphabethical order. I guess Sicilia is wrong numbered, should be 15, after Sardegna (14), not 19 as that's Valle d'Aosta. Thank you for the correction. MiShogun 10:07, 5 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Norway, Skagerrak, and passing water

edit

Hello! I hope you're well. I'm still on my wikibreak of sorts; regardless ...

  • (1) Finally, I've uploaded a detailed geopolitical map of Norway (also note that another already exists in the dedicated county subarticle). It is partially inspired by a similarly loaded map of Canada, which I also created. I regret not getting this to you sooner but, as you can imagine, love doesn't come quickly. :) So, who's your daddy now? Let-me-know-whatyathink!
  • (2) Relatedly, I'm willing to craft a map for Jutland/Denmark or anything else you think necessary; it may take me awhile (days) but the proof is in the pudding. Anyhow, let me know.
  • (3) Thanks for your interest in the proposed oceans wikiproject. Based on the intent, I think it best to call it:
  • This is an over-arching descriptor that entails oceanography (study of oceans and seas) and limnology (lakes). And even though you're not an expert per se, nor am I, I'm sure we can both learn from it. I'll pull something together shortly.

Let me know if you've any questions. Thanks again! E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 16:38, 18 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello there! No problem for the delay; I've been similarly swamped. I've always been interested in geography, but I'm actually a student of biology and political science and a fundraiser by profession. A polymath of sorts ... ;)

Thanks for the feedback regarding the map of Norway. Comments:

  • I deliberated a bit over Svalbard/Jan Mayen and believe I've covered off on their unique nature adequately, hence their renditions on the map (see the legend). Svalbard is not a region per se but still significant: any sovereign or unique polities are rendered on the map in a distinct bold, thick font (as Svalbard is, q.v., Aland). Countries are in similar font but upper case. Lacking an altenate way to render it, note that Svalbard is a shade of violet which, effectively, is a variant of blue meant to hark of its nordicity. (I will tweak the text legend on the talk page of the map, though.)
  • I borrowed the rendition for Greenland from the above indicated map of Canada which, in turn, is the form provided for in the Atlas of Canada; so I think it is a modus vivendi regarding that territory.

It actually mightn't be too much to retrofit the current map for your specific stated purpose (ack!), so I'll put it in on my to-do list ... give me some days, though. In the interim, let me know if you've any questions; thanks again! E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 12:49, 23 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:WikiProject Hydrography...

edit

Hi again. Thanks for your interest and comments. As this is an encyclopedia, containing comprehensive information, I believe it prudent for the proposed project to have a wider scope ... particularly if attempts to roll Wp into a periodic static version (Wikipedia 1.0) are realised. This will also faciliate consistency and allow for growth: to paraphrse: think globally, act locally. :)

The propopsed macrocategory will allow for the following parentage:

I envision all said bodies of water having a consistent infobox (a la the country wikiproject, but obviously not as elaborate), which also lends credence to organising this project under one moniker.

I think hydrology which deals with the science of water (like the water cycle, etc.) and other aspects, not necessarily synonymous with the above, would be too broad for what I'm thinking; however, I'd fully support the hydrography project being rolled into it or another. And I still think your scope of interest – viz. 'political oceanography' – can be fully satisfied within this structure.

I'll pull something together in the next week or so. Hailing frequencies shall remain open. E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 14:44, 23 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your praise. Indeed, Wp is a learning experience; sometimes, though, it is sometimes one of how not to do this-or-that or of people to avoid ... present company excluded, of course! :)
As for other bodies of water: yes – note that the proposed wikiproject name accommodates all of them. I'll keep you apprised. Ta!  :)

Help!!

edit

There are several censors/revisionists on Wikipedia who are determined to delete or gut anythign they personally do not agree with or like. One of these is an editor named Demiurge whose relentless attempts at censorship, blocked only when he is caught red-handed by third party Wikipedians, continues unabated. Please review his attempts to delete my additions to the Tim Pat Coogan wikipage. Evidently he is not the only one.

Demiurge is an Irish censor and a Catholic apologist who has attempted to delete edits to pages as various as Ante Pavelic, Tim Pat Coogan, pre-Code (related, ironically, to movie censorship in the USA by the Catholic church), Eamon de Valera (refugee policy during WWII), and many others. Is this individual going to be permitted to censor, delete, edit, sanitize, gut, or whatever he cares to do, with no one stopping him??? He has just blocked my sourced and cited additions to the Wikipage of Tim Pat Coogan (pls. check edit history).

I do not have my own computer so I am using a rental, but if you wish to contact me, please email me at [email protected] (my friend's email address). I would like to receive a valid reason for his abusive attempts at censorship regarding his "pet" issues.

Will you please consider looking into this matter?

Thank You, 70.19.67.28 22:43, 19 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

P.S.: This is a very black harbinger for Wikipedia, and its helplessness to block abusive editors, and certainly administrators (which Demiurge is not yet, fortunately, but he will certainly attempt to become one).

any reason why don't you upload to commons? The maps you bring here are really great. All other language wikis could benefit from it too. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 14:04, 27 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

not very problematic to set up an account over there. And linking from enWP still is the same. You fame will be much bigger if you upload there. Otherwise people maybe will download the img, upload it at commons, tag it there again, and finally go through deleting it here. Or the image will be double uploaded, once here, later by someoneelse on commons. (or in between on nl,de,es,it).
if you keep logged in at commons the upload should go very fast. In the beginning of commons I worked a lot at commons:Category:Maps to good categorize the images. But don't care, just put it in the main cat, other people can better categorize it later. What do I need to do to convince you ? ;-) Tobias Conradi (Talk) 14:27, 27 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
if I don't catch you by fame I have to look for something else ;-). I would not download all the images. But maybe you have them on your computer? I think they have an upload service over there, i.e. one could mail the stuff to someone who will then upload. Shall I have a look? Tobias Conradi (Talk) 14:40, 27 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Italy map

edit

Hey Big - the map you added to the Provinces of Italy page was a nice map, however, it was redundant (as there already was a provinces map of Italy on the page) - and the numbers on your map had no reference on the page. Hope you don't mind, but I did remove it - unless you think it could replace the current provinces map - in which case, I would ask the creator of the other map if he wouldn't mind it being replaced first. Biggest thing is to avoid a lot of clutter on the page. I know I worked hard on putting the region maps broken down into provinces for reference and wouldn't like the same to occur without a user suggesting/asking. What do you think? I would like to invite you back to WikiProject Former countries. You were previously a member of its former incarnation WP Historical States. The objective of this project is still to improve the content and accessibility of articles on former countries. A taskforce for the states of the Holy Roman Empire has also been started and the child project on Prussia has also been revived. This restart is still in its early days but it would be great to have you back. - 52 Pickup 18:49, 8 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Concordia Newsletter

edit

  NEWSLETTER

Concordia is currently trying to relaunch. I, and all the members of the ex-council, wish to welcome new members to the group. We are a group who aim to promote remaining civil, in an environment where messages can easily be interpretated wrongly.

Help out now!

edit
  • Try and help people remain civil! Talk to them, and help them in any way possible. Do not be afraid to use the talk page.
  • Give people the Civility Barnstar.
  • Make and spread some Wikitokens so people know there are people to help if they want assistance.
  • Add banners or logos to your userpage to show your support.
  • Suggest some ideas! Add 'em to the talk page.

We are a community, so can only work though community contributions and support. It's the helping that counts.

Decision Making

edit

The council expired one month ago, but due to the current position of the group the current council will remain until the position of the group can be assessed, and whether it would be sensible to keep Concordia going. For most decisions, however, it will be decided by all who choose to partake in discussions. I am trying to relaunch because of the vast amounts of new members we have received, demonstrating that the aims are supported.

If you wish to opt of of further talk-page communications, just let us know here.

File source problem with File:Iceland flagmap.jpg

edit

File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Iceland flagmap.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 20:36, 31 January 2009 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk) 20:36, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Turkish Armenia

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Turkish Armenia, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to have no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent. If the page you created was a test, please use the sandbox for any other experiments you would like to do.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Why should I have a User Name? If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

File permission problem with File:Nordic countries in black.gif

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Nordic countries in black.gif. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to [email protected], stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to [email protected].

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 17:13, 24 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
