My philosophy

edit

If an article topic has no reliable, third-party sources, Wikipedia should not have an article on it.

"I can NOT emphasize this enough. There seems to be a terrible bias among some editors that some sort of random speculative 'I heard it somewhere' pseudo information is to be tagged with a 'needs a cite' tag. Wrong. It should be removed, aggressively, unless it can be sourced."

"People have to drop the idea that every little tidbit is precious. Crap is crap. Yank it."

The burden of evidence lies with the editor who adds or restores material. All quotations and any material challenged or likely to be challenged should be attributed to a reliable, published source using an inline citation.

"I think a fair number of people need to be kicked out of the project just for being lousy writers."

"It is an overly optimistic and perhaps naive notion to believe that a body of disorganized editors will produce high quality articles on their own."

The unreliability of Wikipedia will in the end kill it. . . . Wikipedia is not an encyclopaedia, it is a restricted collection of verifiable but at times highly incorrect information.

An encyclopedia where one in ten sentences, fact-checked by at least four editors, is wrong, should not be called an encyclopedia.

Wikipedia is not the sum of human knowledge. It is a severely abridged summary, and sometimes, a very flawed one. Away from high-profile articles that receive diligent scrutiny, it is no better than the last thing said about a topic by a stranger in the pub.

It is easier to get a sincere "thank you" for reverting "you're a faggot" from someone's userpage, than it is for writing a researched, thorough, and referenced encyclopedia article on an encyclopedic topic.

The secret of Wikihappiness

edit
  • This user makes good edits.
  • This user creates above-average articles.
  • This user writes for Wikipedia as if it were a real encyclopedia.
  • This user enjoys the fun of good writing and authoritative sourcing.
  • This user likes to think that somebody, somewhere may be helped by some reliable fact this user posts.
  • This user admits that this may be a slightly egotistic delusion.
  • This user realizes there is more to life than an encyclopedia, even a free one, can ever provide.
  • This user believes if more were going on in our lives, there would be fewer Wikipedians.
  • This user confesses that despite a certain fond feeling, Wikipedia is no substitute for chocolate, friendship, love, or sex, and is just barely on a par with masturbation.
  • This user tries not to be a dick, though sometimes sorely tempted, and sometimes failing.
  • This user would like to be a class act, but that would probably mean having to go study Zen or something like that, and who's got the time?
  • This user is learning not to be pissed off by rudeness, arrogance, and general ignorance.
  • This user accepts that one day the sun will explode and so will the merry anarchy that is Wikipedia.
  • While the party lasts, THEREFORE,

In a good way, of course.  :-)

Why the Internet still sucks

Strange but True

edit

Writing for a massively multi-moron encyclopedia is a lot more fun than writing for a very quiet professional one. While I prefer the latter in theory, I prefer the former in practice.

Tip of the moment...

How to make redirects appear green to you

Here is a trick to make redirected wikilinks stand out by turning them green instead of blue! This is especially useful when working on navigation aids like lists and outlines, where you need to be sure a link leads to where it says it links to. This quick and easy solution uses customized CSS:

Go to your Preferences, click on the "Appearance" tab, and click the "Custom CSS" to the right of the skin you use. It opens a page to edit, and you can add the following code (just copy and paste it):

	.mw-redirect {
		color: #006633;
	}
	.mw-redirect:visited {
		color: #009900;
	}
	.mw-redirect:hover {
		color: #995000;
	}
	.mw-redirect:active {
		color: #995000;
	}
Save the page, and reload (bypass your browser cache) and/or (Purge) the Wikipedia server to force the new CSS to be included. All redirects will now show up as green links! If you prefer a different color, you can modify them by using six-digit hex codes.
To add this auto-randomizing template to your user page, use {{totd-random}}
