Is the fish "scary" or "easily scared"? --Nate

Dictionary.com gives this:

chub n. pl. chub or chubs 1. Any of various freshwater fishes of the family Cyprinidae related to the carps and minnows, especially a Eurasian species, Leuciscus cephalus. 2. Any of various North American fishes, such as a freshwater whitefish of the genus Coregonus or a marine fish of the genus Kyphosus.

It seems the current article only covers part of the first definition. porges 00:05, Mar 1, 2005 (UTC)

Based on the geographical description I think the user was trying to describe "Northern Creek Chub". However they are easy to catch and not endangered. I'm pretty sure there is a European Chub as well. Probably other kinds in the US. I have caught them in NJ, PA and Virginia. Skeeter08865

'chub' also refers to a sausage shape. No, I'm not being vulgar here. I mean, do a search for chub and sausage or cheese and you'll find links to Hickory Farms type Christmas Meat packages, where 'Chub' is used to describe the form of a short, fat sausage.

Thing is, I'm not sure if this is worth a disambiguation page or anything, since the definition doesn't even show up in Websters.

Take care not to put in pictures when you're not familiar with the fish. Not all files on commons are reliable, especially those from public aquaria (pike). It is also wise to compare a lot of pictures using google, before placing one.Viridiflavus 19:09, 8 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Page title?

edit

I may be treading on delicate ground but, here goes. Earlier today, I made the Chub (disambiguation) page to deal with the various fish with that common name. Subsequently, I got to thinking that, perhaps, the disambig page should take the name "Chub" and this page should take the name "European chub" or something like that, if you get what I mean. In support of this view, in checking What links here for this page, one finds that the majority of the pages linking here are not trying to link to the European chub, specifically but to one or another of the other species or to no specific species at all. Thoughts? — Dave (Talk | contribs) 18:34, 16 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I would say not a big deal either way, but looks like this should be the dab page. Rich Farmbrough, 07:54 18 October 2007 (GMT).
What you propose sounds like the perfect solution, especially given your "what links here" research. Plus, one never knows when a Chub article unrelated to the fish might be created. Having the DAB already in place just makes it easier on everyone involved I think. So in summary, you want to move "Chub" --> "European Chub" and "Chub (disambiguation)" --> "Chub"? I say go for it! I agree with Arakumen above. The chub disambiguation page makes it clear that there are many other uses for "chub". —Pengo 01:56, 19 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the input, friends. It was most helpful. I'll make the moves forthwith and we'll see, thereafter, if they're controversial! ;-) — Dave (Talk | contribs) 12:25, 19 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Looks good so far. The easy finish might just be to swing the redirect on the "chub" page to point to the DAB page. Arakunem 13:37, 19 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yes, that's a good idea (done). I hadn't thought of that. Instead, I placed a couple of requests at Wikipedia:Requested moves#Uncontroversial proposals. I'll leave those requests there because that's the ultimate fix. Thanks for your help. — Dave (Talk | contribs) 14:01, 19 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Plural of "Chub"?

edit

User:Northmetpit recently edited the article to change all of the occurrences where the word chubs was used for the plural of chub to simply chub. I offer these references (there are many, many others) that the inflected form chubs is generally found in the literature. [1][2][3][4]. Similarly, within Wikipedia itself, I point to Mohave tui chub, Sea chub, Tui chub, and Leatherside chub (among many others) that use chubs for the derived form of the noun. Hence, and with regret, I will revert these good faith edits until further evidence that chub is the correct plural form for the word chub can be provided. Cheers! — Dave (Talk | contribs) 02:54, 22 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
