Need his age

edit

It would be helpful to know his age, since this is an issue in politics today. Alexs2940 (talk) 17:30, 6 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Should Meyer be treated like every other major party candidate?

edit

Since he won the Democratic nomination for governor of Delaware, he'd normally be entitled to have the s-ppo template on his page (as has every major-party politician). This is a longstanding precedent on Wikipedia. Woko Sapien (talk) 22:02, 24 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Pinging notwally. Woko Sapien (talk) 22:03, 24 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the ping. Was there some discussion that established this supposed long-standing precendent? Especially since it is factually incorrect because a party nominee is not a "political party office". In addition, why would this just be for "major parties"? Further, it is not on "every major party candidate"; for example Nancy Pelosi does not have any nominations listed in the boxes at the end of her article. I also had never seen it in any of the state-level politician articles I have edited in the past until it started getting added to them in the past month or so. – notwally (talk) 22:08, 24 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think there's some confusion over political party offices and party political offices.
As I mentioned on your talk page, a clear precedent has been established that being the "X nominee for Y" qualifies for the party political office template (for what it's worth, I've never been a huge fan of the template name myself). When and where was it established? I don't know.
And while I'm not 100% certain, the reason someone like Pelosi doesn't have that exact same template is because none of the elections she's run in have had specific pages (House elections rarely do). On the other hand, her California colleague Dianne Feinstein has that template for her gubernatorial run in 1990 as well as her U.S. Senate runs in 1992, 1994, 2000, 2006, 2012, 2018 (notice how all those elections have specific pages). Another example is Keith Ellison, who has the template for being the Congressional Progressive Caucus chairman, Democratic National Committee deputy chairman, and the Democratic nominee for Minnesota AG in 2018 and 2022. Rightly or wrongly, it isn't strictly used for people who hold office within a political organization. Woko Sapien (talk) 22:26, 24 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Respectfully, if it is factually wrong and there is no discussion establishing consensus for it across all articles, I don't think it should be getting added to more articles. A party nomination is not an "office" at all. I genuinely appreciate our discussion, but I suspect that we are not going to change each others minds, and so maybe it would be helpful to try to get some other opinions? Last week, I had posted to WikiProject Biography for politics and government (also linked to the discussion on BLPN and the main WikiProject Biography talk page), but received no responses: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Biography/Politics and government#Political nominees in boxes at end of articles. Maybe you would have more luck? – notwally (talk) 22:36, 24 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Agreed, we're probably not going to persuade each other on this issue. I will say (and I sincerely don't mean this as a taunt) that should Meyer's campaign be successful, the template will probably get restored anyway by someone else. One of the reasons you might not have had any responses yet to your inquiry is because the precedent is just that strong. Woko Sapien (talk) 22:46, 24 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Not taken as a taunt at all. I genuinely had not seen this on most state-level articles prior to the past month, and I will be interested to see how it goes. I appreciate the honest discussion. – notwally (talk) 23:10, 24 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Therequiembellishere: any thoughts on the discussion above? My take is that Template:S-ppo should continue to be used for all party nominees in elections with individual pages; notwally disagrees on the basis that the template should be used exclusively for posts within a party itself. They've asked when and where that precedent/consensus was established, which I honestly don't know. --Woko Sapien (talk) 14:26, 25 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I would also note the template's description: "This template creates a header to be used with succession boxes for people holding offices within political parties." Nominations are neither offices nor is there succession in terms of a title or office. – notwally (talk) 19:11, 25 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
For what it's worth, most presidents, governors, and senators have political party nomination succession boxes. 2601:249:9301:D570:29CA:85DF:7AD8:1F48 (talk) 05:06, 8 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
There is also WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS, and from what I have seen, many of these boxes have been inserted by a small number of editors making mass additions. A possible solution would be to create a different box for party nominations if that is something the community thinks is important enough to include at the end of the pages. – notwally (talk) 02:54, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
