Is there any connection between the maetae and meath in Ireland? I know legend connects the king that created meath's originally wanting to do so with the help of Romans from Scotland but have not seen maetae and meath connected.

It doesn't look likely - the earliest known form of the name "Meath" is Old Irish Míde, literally "middle". The similarity between Latin Meatae (/me:atаɪ/) and modern English "Meath" (/mi:ð/) is not phonetic - they look similar, but represent different sounds, because the two languages have very different spelling systems. --Nicknack009 (talk) 21:33, 30 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
