Does the 8500 post-date the 8501?

According to the article, the 8500 was released in 1985, while the 7501/8501 was in 1984. Is this correct? Based on the descriptions, I can't see any difference between the two - did the 8500 use HMOS-1, HMOS-2, or something else? Can someone expand this a bit? Right now I am confused.
