Contested deletion
editThe colon is confirmed to be part of the title. In this source at an official Nintendo website, the title is indeed Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. --ThomasO1989 (talk)
- Never mind, since the article has to be deleted in order for the other one to move. --ThomasO1989 (talk)

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon → Luigi's Mansion 2 – I remember the squabble over Dark Chronicle, where it was eventually decided that, as North America was the only gaming territory to market the game under a different name (Dark Cloud 2), it was in the minority, and the majority title should lead. The exact same problem has reared its ugly head here and should be solved using the exact same solution. Yellow Mage (talk) 20:49, 25 March 2013 (UTC)

- Oppose per Melodia. I didn't realize it was developed in North America, but now that I know, I don't think this is a Dark Cloud 2/Dark Chronicle situation. In the latter, it was the fact that the "native" name of the game was Dark Chronicle in addition to the fact that some English-speaking territories called it Dark Chronicle that that name won out. JP-developed JP name EU name > NA name, therefore, Dark Chronicle. NA-developed NA name > JP name EU name, therefore, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. Axem Titanium (talk) 14:54, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
- Weak Oppose - My gut instinct is to oppose, but being a North American myself, and thus being surrounded by references and people calling the game Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, obviously skewers my perception... but as per Axem, the fact the game was developped in NA gives weight to the NA title. :) ·Salvidrim!· ✉ 23:23, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
- Weak oppose per Salvidrim. Note that the majority of reliable sources refer to it as "Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon", such as IGN, Kotaku, and Joystiq. Although these are all American, they are often used in videogame articles, with the first two being reliable, reputable sources per WP:VG/RS and the latter is also often used. WP:COMMONNAME may apply here, "The most common name for a subject, as determined by its prevalence in reliable English-language sources" (should be used). - Oppose per Melodia's reasoning. Lord Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 19:54, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

- How is a link to Nintendo UK's site helpful? We already know it's called that there. ♫ Melodia Chaconne ♫ (talk) 01:30, 1 April 2013 (UTC)
- Agreed, no one had denied that the game has that title in Europe. However, the main arguments for retaining the current title are that the company that made the game, Next Level Games, is a North American company and the fact that most of the major gaming sites use Dark Moon. Neither of those arguments are refuted by that link.--64.229.164.74 (talk) 21:51, 1 April 2013 (UTC)
- Weak Oppose - Per Salvidrim, the fact that it seems like I've seen Dark Moon be used more often in general as well. Sergecross73 msg me 14:48, 1 April 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose: I've seen the Dark Moon name used more than Luigi's Mansion 2. Most sources use the former name, so this is the name that most people would be more familiar with. Lugia2453 (talk) 00:41, 4 April 2013 (UTC)
Discussion
edit- Any additional comments:
- I remember the squabble over Dark Chronicle, where it was eventually decided that, as North America was the only gaming territory to market the game under a different name (Dark Cloud 2), it was in the minority, and the majority title should lead. The exact same problem has reared its ugly head here and should be solved using the exact same solution. Also, I added it to the "potentially controversial" list three days ago (just in case), but nothing has happened, so I think it's pretty safe to say it's uncontroversial. Yellow Mage (talk) 22:27, 28 March 2013 (UTC) Comment moved from rejected technical move request so this point can be part of the discussion. Steel1943 (talk) 04:25, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
- Given it was developed in North America, I would think the NA name should take preference (on the English WP). ♫ Melodia Chaconne ♫ (talk) 06:09, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
- I don't know how much this matters, but. If you do a Google search "Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon" has 26.5M matches and "Luigi's Mansion 2" 23.2M (searches without the apostrophe are 3M for each). So Dark Moon title is slightly more used there, not by a massive margin only about 15%. Although one is higher, one title does not get used MASSIVELY more than the other. Thought I might check and tell you. Carlwev (talk) 08:57, 29 March 2013 (UTC)

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon → Luigi's Mansion 2 – The "Dark Moon" subtitle was only used in North America and Korea when the game first released in 2013. Considering that the remaster will now use "Luigi's Mansion 2" everywhere, I think the page should be moved as well since that will be the new name for the game globally. LeDroider (talk) 00:59, 10 October 2023 (UTC) — Relisting. Lightoil (talk) 15:36, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose This is an article about the Nintendo DS version, whose common English name is and always will be Dark Moon. There will undoubtedly be a section on the remaster, but that isn't the main subject of the article. If the remaster gets a separate page it can be called Luigi's Mansion 2 (2024 video game) but that is unlikely. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 04:41, 11 October 2023 (UTC)
- Weak oppose It's a valid point to bring up, but I feel the remaster shouldn't have an effect on the original 3DS North American title of the game. A decade and two consoles later it's very separated from the original work. Panini! • 🥪 19:10, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
- Comment - WP:COMMONNAME is a common metric used to decide what should be an article title should be. On Wikipedia:
- Now, obviously some of that is due to the article's current name, but even still...that's awfully lopsided for a name that is supposedly supposed to be more common... Sergecross73 msg me 19:21, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
- Pageviews are not really a suitable metric here. Search engines (which likely bring in the most visitors) almost never show redirects, much less among the first few search results. On Wikipedia itself, the only ways for a "normal" user to get to the redirect and have it count as a view is by clicking on an existing wikilink (of which there are exactly 0 in article space) or typing out the name in full and pressing Enter in the search field. As people tend to just click on the listing for Dark Moon shown (at the very latest) once the user typed in "Luigi's", this is also rarely happens. IceWelder [✉] 21:37, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
- I don't disagree, I'm just saying that's its not a particularly good sign for it being the COMMONNAME if people are only typing the name into the search bar appropriately two times a day when we're talking about a game that sold over 6 million copies. - Weak oppose, since Dark Moon appears to be the more common title, due to an American-centric element to this in accessible reviews and such. --ProtoDrake (talk) 20:49, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
- Weak oppose it's a good thought, but WP:COMMONNAME makes the most sense here. We can revisit if other factor come into play, after the remaster. Shooterwalker (talk) 03:19, 18 October 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose for now. I don't believe its realistic to think the COMMONNAME has changed, or will change until once the 2024 iteration is actually released. I think we should wait and re-evaluate at that point. Sergecross73 msg me 15:56, 18 October 2023 (UTC)
