Filmography

edit

IMDB is generally not considered an acceptable source so I have avoided citing it. We need a full filmography section, but I am unfamiliar with the process of creating one. I have created a list of his video essays based on six sources: the BFI profile, two separate Criterion Collection author entries (it seems there is one for the :: kogonada spelling and another for Kogonada), his homepage, and his vimeo profile (especially for his earliest films).

Kogonada seems to have a couple of commissioned brand promotions, one for BIFA, another for Samsung, and still another for Criterion that I had included but have removed. The list of video essays should be strictly about his video essays concerning Art film Auteurs. I have considered adding links and explanations for the various films and directors each essay concerns, but have decided against the idea. Malan88 (talk) 19:42, 20 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Possible vandalism

edit

Looking through the history of this article I have found that at it's most extensive it was 13,928 bytes. It was whittled down to 13,219 bytes before 12,817 bytes were deleted by 2601:480:8600:7CA0:CD73:9821:DDEE:1089. Since then it has been periodically added to by a variety of people. There is no rationale provided for the deletion, it was done as a mobile edit.

It is possible that Kogonada himself deleted the page. In the history is a prior anonymous edit which states "I would prefer not to have a wikipedia page. But if it must exist, please omit the name I had to give for the NPR interview. Thank you." and a deletion of Kogonada's name.

I am going to restore the article from its most expansive and make sure his real name is not included to respect his wishes. Malan88 (talk) 19:57, 20 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

I have restored significant portions of the original article but not the entire thing, and not without editing.

Kogonada's work certainly meets the notability requirement for Wikipedia, the controversy seems to stem from his wish to remain anonymous. I have therefore left out certain references to his personal life out of respect. I have also seen comments in the history, as well as an action needed tag, that suggest the quality of the writing resembles an advertisement. I have made those edits I have deemed judicious to prevent such a tone from appearing.

Help and criticism very welcome.Malan88 (talk) 20:18, 20 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Through more research I have found the following debate about deletion: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Kogonada

I am entirely unsure how to proceed. It seems I have tripped exactly the circumstance Jason Tracy has discussed in that debate. I feel that Kogonada's work is fascinating enough, after having watched Columbus and subsequently most of his video essays, for him to have a Wikipedia page. I understand his reluctance to have one as well. For the time being, I am leaving my edit and requesting that LionFosset, who seems to have been point on the original article and subsequent discussion, examine the current circumstances of the article. Kogonada's given name

edit

just wanted to flag that the given name that was on his wikipedia was incorrect and can provide an ID if it's helpful Chvngan (talk) 21:34, 13 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Also full disclosure I work with Kogonada so I know it wasn't correct Chvngan (talk) 21:35, 13 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Whether it's correct or not, if he doesn't want his name to be published, we should remove it per WP:BLPPRIVACY. Nardog (talk) 04:17, 14 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
He'd prefer it not to be published for privacy reasons but I don't think that's allowed from what I gathered from the community, so if we have to publish a name, would much rather have it be his correct given one. But if it's possible to not have it in there, that'd be preferred Chvngan (talk) 04:28, 14 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
For privacy reason, could I propose that we not publish his given name? If his given name has to be published could we please put Kogonada's given name in Korean right next to it in parentheses (박중은)? And lastly, if we have to publish his given name, for the line "Kogonada—a pseudonym—is a regular contributor to Sight & Sound," would it be possible to get rid of the word pseudonym in that line? Thank you so much Chvngan (talk) 15:11, 14 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure we should be using his name at all, per WP:BLPPRIVACY. His Instagram account isn't verified, and it doesn't appear that reliable, secondary sources have widely published his name. The New York Times and the Financial Times, for example, don't use it at all. Woodroar (talk) 15:46, 14 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Months later, but I agree. His name has not been "widely published" and it certainly can't be "reasonably inferred" that he doesn't object to his name being public. The sourcing isn't really there and he's never been known by his actual name in a public capacity. We can assume what his full name is from a combination of relatively obscure sources, but there's no good way to accurately incorporate that information into the article. Case in point, the current version of the article (which I'm going to edit out for now) claims that Kogonada was "born Ernie Park," but that particular phrasing isn't supported by the source. "Ernie" could be a nickname for "Ernest," it could have been added to his name upon moving to America, etc (we even have a quote in this very article where he says he doesn't identify with his "American name"). That Instagram account is definitely his but the same problem would exist if we went with his Instagram name: we don't have firm, citable context for what that name refers to. It may be an indication that he will start identifying himself as Joong-Eun Park in reliable publications in the near future, but for now we'd have to lean too much on assumptions to include his "real" name.
