Move
editI moved this article from fructose intolerance to hereditary fructose intolerance because that is what the article is about, the full name is commonly used and full, specific names are preferred by naming conventions. Also, it disambiguates the article from dietary fructose intolerance. I did not make fructose intolerance a disambiguation page or put a disambiguation link at the top of this article because dietary fructose intolerance does not currently have an article. Once it does have an article, one of those options should be chosen. If "fructose intolerance" usually refers to the hereditary type, then a disambiguation link should be used. Otherwise, a disambiguation page should be created. -- Kjkolb 22:08, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
Medical Concerns
editI have Hereditary Fructose Intolerance (HFI) and am a part of a large (online) group of people who have HFI. There is very little known about this condition and the articles that have been sourced have inaccurate information. This information is inaccurate to the point that it can cause a patient with HFI severe medical issues. I regularly attempt to remove the dangerous information, but a bot continues to revert my changes. 50.73.174.54 (talk) 15:30, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
- I reverted your edits, not a bot. The information you changed / added was not supported by the citation I used for my information, nor did you add another cite. Check out WP:MEDRS for guidelines on how to source your additions so they are not reverted. If I compare our two versions, I see some minor wording changes, the removal of sections relating to management by a dietician and the addition of a blog. Can you please expand upon the changes you consider dangerous? And provide some sources for your changes. Canada Hky (talk) 23:16, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
- The problem with citing articles is that even doctors and dieticians don't know how to properly treat this condition. There are very few medical articles that are 100% accurate. The other issues with finding sources is that most are restricted and you either have to pay for access or have access through work. The sentence referring a patient (or parent of a child with HFI) to a dietitian is particularly dangerous. There have been many reports of parents who have received recommendations from dietitians to feed their HFI children fruit and vegetables (like bananas and tomatoes). The upper limit for fructose/sucrose(etc) ingestion for adults with HFI has been measured at 100mg. A banana alone has 10912mg of fructose AND 5377mg of sucrose. One banana is over 160x the daily limit. Children, being much, much smaller than adults, can tolerate even less. This is why doctors don't expect children with HFI to survive without diagnosis. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.73.174.54 (talk) 21:23, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
- You are highlighting one of the real, abysmal problems with this website. People are gonna die because of this, and likely already have. 2A00:23C8:9F93:FB01:8C09:C121:13D2:FF7E (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 22:17, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
- PS I also have HFI. Keep up the good work. 2A00:23C8:9F93:FB01:8C09:C121:13D2:FF7E (talk) 22:21, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
Fructose malabsorption
editPlease do not remove the See Also link to Fructose_malabsorption.
The two topics should distinguish the two conditions on an agreed best science evidence basis.
