Erwin Panofsky (1892-1968)
editGerman-American art historian and essayist, whose famous books include The Life and Art of Albrecht Dürer (1943) and Studies in Iconology (1939). Panofsky defined an artist as "one who is full of images." He was especially concerned with the iconography of the various periods he studied and interpreted works through the themes, symbols, and ideas inherent in the history of art.
Do you mean Warburg instead of Marburg, near the top? I'm changing it until further notice. Lewallen 02:32, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
I did a major update on this page after examining some of Panofsky's works & some works about Panofsky. I think I've filled out the article a bit more. I'm very tempted to create individual articles for some of his more notable works, but I do like having it all self-contained in ove article. SetsofWaves 16:07, 10 December 2006 (CST)
- much better to do it all here, especially as none of his books is really really well known by itself. Johnbod 22:39, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
Panofsky, Barnnett Newman and thhe VIR HEROICUS controversy
