Puerto Rico
editCould someone produce at least a couple of countries that consider Puerto Rico to be a US colony, as the article states at the bottom? It's true that the US Congress can (and has) pass laws pertaining to Puerto Rico without PR's consent, but most internal matters are handled by the Puerto Rican legislature, and Puerto Rico isn't subject to US income taxes: [1]
The article seems to imply Iran is one, but it also implies there are "many" more.
Same comments apply for Guam, etc. Quicksilvre (talk) 14:06, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
- The member countries of the Non-Aligned Movement recognize Puerto Rico's current colonial status and demands its independence. [2] I believe that's more than just a couple of countries... --Agüeybaná 12:47, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
- I added a "disputed" tag to Puerto Rico's inclusion. See Political status of Puerto Rico#Controversies --LucasGK123 (talk) 00:38, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
- Puerto Rico was a colony, but today it is more accurately described as a semi-autonomous territory. Of course it is not fully autonomous, for if it were it would be a country. It does have its own elections for a legislature and governor. (The now-elected Governor of Puerto Rico was formerly appointed by the President of the USA. The last President to appoint a Governor of Puerto Rico was Harry Truman!) The Mysterious El Willstro (talk) 07:36, 17 August 2021 (UTC)
- Expanding on the comment above dated 12:47, 14 June 2008 (UTC) by editor Agüeybaná ("The member countries of the Non-Aligned Movement recognize Puerto Rico's current colonial status and demands its independence. [3] I believe that's more than just a couple of countries...") regarding the 120 countries of the NAM that consider Puerto Rico a colony, his cite was archived on 7 January 2009 at 12:00:31 AM here. Merge list
editThe newly created article List of colonies is the better suited location for the contentious list here. I just dont have the time to move it. Anyone? Nsae Comp (talk) 22:28, 6 April 2023 (UTC)
