1889 legislation
editThe district was eventually combined into the traditional county of Aberdeenshire, along with Marr due to Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889? I suspect not. See "Talk:Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889" for some discussion re boundary changes under this legislation. Laurel Bush 11:01, 25 October 2006 (UTC).
See also Boundaries of Counties and Parishes in Scotland, Hay Shennan, 1892, which details boundary changes immediately following the legislation, and makes no reference that I can find to any Buchan district. The county system of local administration was already well established in 1889. The legislation created elected county councils and adjusted boundaries.
Also, to describe the existing committee area as also some pre-county district really does not make much sense. I imagine the committee area is actually a subdivision of a former district of the Grampian region.
Anyone got a reason for the apparent co-existence of a Banff and Buchan committee area and a separate Buchan committee area?

- You are right, I checked and Buchan and Marr were combined prior to Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889, The Mearns was made part of Aberdeenshire later. I have amended the article accordingly. The reason there is a Banff and Buchan committee area as well as the Buchan committee area is because part of Banff became part of Aberdeenshire council, the part including Banff and MacDuff, which was previosly in the county of Banff. Rather than have a seperate committee area for this part, it was included with west Buchan to create "Banff and Buchan". It would be incorrect to refer to this area as Banff as should include the county of Banff, which is also in Moray. I would also stress that the map here does not relate to the current committee area but to the older parish, which is larger. The same is true of Marr which currently stretches north of the River Don, which was the northern limit of Marr. A map of the modern rearranged areas can be found here. Historic Buchan
editThe article has, almost as a throw-away line - The area is also an historic district and earldom, - in some ways this is the most significant meaning, the modern committee area being a very recent development - important though it may be to delivery of services to local people nowadays. More prominence should be given to the historic district - ideally by someone with more knowledge of the history of this corner of Scotland than me! cheers Geopersona (talk) 06:27, 21 December 2014 (UTC)
