Odysseus

"A solar eclipse may mark the return of Odysseus, legendary King of Ithaca, to his kingdom after the Trojan War."

'In the Odyssey, XIV, 151, Homer states that Odysseus will return to his home, and take vengeance on the suitors of Penelope, at the failing of the old moon and the coming of the new. Later in the Odyssey (XX, 356-357 and 390), Homer adds that the Sun vanished out of heaven and an evil gloom covered all things about the hour of the midday meal, during the celebration of the new moon. A total eclipse of the Sun was visible from the Greek island of Ithaca on April 16, 1178 BC.'

I take it to mean that an eclipse happened on April 16, 1178BC, but, since Odysseus was a legendary character, may not have marked any actual return. --Ben davison 22:59, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

Collis P. Huntington

There is ongoing discussion on Talk:Collis Potter Huntington about his correct birth date. More reliable evidence has been found and cited pointing to October 21 or October 22. The editor who has been advocating an April 16 birth date for Huntington has engaged in disruptive editing to keep that date and suppress the October date. Shepherd girl

Bernadette Soubirous, French shepherd girl is not notable because she achieved some shepherd's exploits. She had visions and was ack'd saint by the RC church.

I hope that we have enough imagination to go over pettish fears of religious disputes : if she is notable, it's for the same reason that she's been canonized ; not because of her shepherdessness. Yes ?

Plural list for VTech massacre deaths

I believe the list of deaths should include only the names of notable people. Adding a plural entry for the victims of the Virginia Tech massacre seems like WP:MEMORIAL to me. These people have already been mentioned in the line for 2007 events:

2007 - Virginia Tech massacre, the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history, leaves 33 dead.

There is already a precendence with September 11. Every subject who has a Wikipedia article gets to have their date of birth and date of death listed. --However whatever 21:14, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

Fair enough - re the precedent - but it's only a matter of time before this approach collapses under its own weight. As more people use Wikipedia and more relatives, friends, co-workers make entries about their dead friends these multiple death lists will approach 100% of the # of dead. Imagine if the recent Peruvian earthquake (500 dead) had wiki-entries for even 20% of the dead - that makes for a list that is both long and not very useful. My $0.02. Adding redlinks to the Births and Deaths sections is not allowed on Day articles. When articles about non-notable people are created, they are usually quickly deleted. It is extremely unlikely that hundreds of notable people would be killed in a single event. I believe the highest number of notable people to be killed in one event is in this month's plane crash in Russia. An ordinary person cannot become notable due to being killed. Removal of entries

In accordance with the guidelines, I've started weeding the Births and Deaths sections by removing entries for celebrities with 0-4 articles in other languages. Where possible, these will be transferred to the relevant Year in Topic articles. As well as making the lists more manageable, this will help with the globalization effort.Deb (talk) 10:53, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

Jackie Robinson

Baseball considers April 15, 1947 to be the day Jackie Robinson broke the color line with the Brooklyn Dodgers, and yet this page cites April 16, 1947 as the day that occurred. Which is correct? Hanksummers (talk) 17:36, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Easter?

Why is Easter missing from today? It's a major holiday in many countries, and Wikipedia tends to mention even minor feast days specific to small regions, so why is Easter missing? It's a promotion of a business. From the article: "Foursquare Day was coined by Nate Bonilla-Warford, an optometrist from Tampa, Florida on March 12, 2010.
