Description
English: This rooftop-mounted urban wind turbine charges a 12 volt battery and runs various 12 volt appliances within the building on which it is installed.

The Lakota wind turbine from True North Power has been working well in the 330 Dundas Street location, Toronto, Ontario. This picture was made possible by the high light output of the Metz Mecablitz (flash and blur) used in conjunction with the Nikon D2h in bright sunny weather.

The flash was fired on a first-curtain synchronization of the mechanical (titanium blades) focal plane shutter in the D2h. Thus we can see from the mixture of flash and blur that the direction of rotation of the Lakota is clockwise, when facing the "front" of the turbine (front being defined by the side on which the vane faces away from the observer).

This wind turbine is a 12 volt system, used to run all the wearable computing and cyborglogging at the Existential Technology Research Lab and EyeTap Personal Imaging Lab. Servers and base stations thus continue to run in the event of a power failure. A large (2000 Amp Hour) battery is used to store energy not immediately needed by EyeTaps that are left on the charge stations.
