  • [1] Similar problems of succession also arose in the Provençal kingdom created by Boso in 879. Although the Carolingian rulers had briefly made common cause against the upstart ruler, they never managed to wrest back the southernmost portion of the kingdom. Boso's own brother Richard soon rejoined the Carolingian side, and in 882, he captured Vienne as well as Boso's wife and daughter. Abandoned by his leading supporters, the would-be king slid into obscurity until his death on 11 january 887.
  • [3]: One offence against Carolingian unity ceased when Boso of Vienne died in January 887.His son Louis did homage to Charles the Fat and the emperor, reverting to the old Greco-Roman expedient, 'adopted' him: Provence was restored in appearance to Carlingian rule.
