Arden, Market Harborough

Arden is a suburb[3] and ward[4] of the town of Market Harborough in Leicestershire, England. Its name can also be traced back to an abandoned village which was previously located near the former church.[5][6]

Geography

edit

The ward covers the northern part of the town and extends into Great Bowden. It also covers the main railway station and includes roads such as The Headlands, Arden Way, Great Bowden Road and The Ridgeway.[7] It is predominantly residential and has some small green spaces.

St Mary in Arden Church

edit

The area is home to the ruins of St Mary in Arden Church, which was once the parish church and was built in the 13th century.[8] The church was left in a state of disrepair from the 17th century and the ruins were later repurposed for a museum with parts of the original stone church being reused including wolf carvings, a door porch, and stained glass windows.[9] The word "Arden" in the church name is thought to be associated with Rockingham Forest, Northampton, rather than from any place called Arden.[10]
