The Global Maritime Forum released a report on Aggregating demand for Zero Emission Shipping Fuels Green ammonia and methanol are two zero-emission fuels that have seen significant interest in the shipping industry. 🚢 🌊 Over the past two years, progress has been made in ordering vessels capable of running on methanol or ammonia. Nearly 300 are scheduled to be delivered by 2028 with more expected to follow. Yet only a handful of shipping companies have so far secured an adequate supply of the fuels. Could demand aggregation be the solution that helps crack the code on scaling sustainable shipping fuels? In the first of a new two-part insight brief, written by Joe Boyland, we explore the challenges early movers are experiencing in securing green methanol and ammonia, and how to overcome them. Read ‘Aggregating demand for zero-emission shipping fuels: Concepts and approaches’ below, and keep an eye out for part two next week. Exploring the Role of Clean Hydrogen in Decarbonizing the Power Sector by Clean Air Task Force The report delves into critical questions about the potential of clean hydrogen in reducing carbon emissions from the power sector: 1️⃣ Is burning hydrogen in power plants technically feasible? 2️⃣ What infrastructure is required, and what are the associated costs? 3️⃣ Does using low-carbon hydrogen reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions from power plants? 4️⃣ How do the economics of hydrogen compare to alternative technologies? The findings highlight that while hydrogen can generate electricity—whether in retrofitted gas plants or new hydrogen-burning turbines—the practical application heavily depends on costly infrastructure for storage and transport. Additionally, the large scale production of green hydrogen requires significant amounts of renewable electricity and land, consuming about three-fourths of all clean electricity stored and generated via hydrogen. The paper also suggests that using hydrogen for clean electricity generation may remain very costly, especially when compared to other technologies like advanced geothermal, nuclear, or long-duration energy storage. It raises the question: Is hydrogen a cost-effective solution for bulk power production or load following and storage? The conclusion indicates that while low-carbon hydrogen holds promise, especially in industry and heavy transportation, its extensive use in power generation warrants further scrutiny. 📄 Read more on why prioritizing hydrogen for industrial and transportation applications could be the key to effective decarbonization. On the sidelines of the Stockholm World Water Week, and together with the African Union’s Continental Africa Water Investment Programme - AIP International High Level Panel on Water Investments for Africa, the African Water Facility will launch the Africa Urban Sanitation Investment Initiative (AUSII). The Facility, hosted by the African Development Bank Group, is the only project preparation and promotion facility solely dedicated to water and sanitation in Africa. The Africa Urban Sanitation Investment Initiative will function as a new financing window for urban sanitation within the African Water Facility, addressing the sanitation challenges in African cities. Despite sanitation being a fundamental human right, critical to public health, environmental sustainability, and overall well-being, Africa has one of the lowest access rates in the world. An estimated 779 million people on the continent lack basic sanitation services, 208 million still practice open defecation, and 839 million lack basic hygiene services. The African Development Bank estimates that every year, the number of people without access to urban sanitation increases by more than 10 million, due to rapid population growth. The African Water Facility will, through the new sanitation financing window, mobilise and deploy financing, prepare bankable and investment-ready projects, and implement innovative and inclusive approaches such as the city-wide inclusive sanitation approach, which promotes tailor-made sanitation solutions for neighbourhoods and cities. Over the next ten years, the Facility aims to provide 15 million people with safely-managed sanitation services through 50 projects, and attract $7 billion in additional investments. The launch is open to African water ministers, and representatives of donor institutions, observers, partners, development finance institutions, regional and river basin organisations, the private sector, and media.

Prospects and Challenges in Exporting UK Green Hydrogen to Europe by Arup A recent government-commissioned study explores the potential for the UK to export hydrogen to continental Europe. Here are the key takeaways: 💡 Opportunities: - The UK has significant potential to produce low-carbon hydrogen and export it to Europe, which aims to import up to 10 million tons of hydrogen annually by 2030. - Several pipeline and non-pipeline transport options exist, including repurposing existing natural gas pipelines and shipping hydrogen carriers like ammonia or liquid organic hydrogen carriers. - Potential export corridors and import locations in northwest Europe have been identified, leveraging planned hydrogen infrastructure like the European Hydrogen Backbone. 💡Challenges: - Significant new pipeline and port infrastructure investments will be required to enable large-scale hydrogen exports from the UK. - Regulatory, permitting, and technical hurdles must be overcome to repurpose existing gas pipelines for hydrogen service. - Hydrogen production and transport costs remain relatively high compared to fossil fuels, requiring policy support and market development. - Coordinating the ramp-up of UK hydrogen supply and European import infrastructure will be critical. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗶𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗨𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 A Case Study by Taylor & Francis Group and published by CRC Press The increase in fossil fuel consumption generates an excessive emission of carbon dioxide. Apart from increasing the efficiency of devices, and switching to low- emission or renewable sources, it is also proposed to capture carbon dioxide and its storage or, what is more acceptable, to apply it, as a useful product in the utilization process. The latter solution is preferred due to the lack of public consent to storing carbon dioxide underground, especially in place of residence. This book focuses on the carbon chain, starting from the formation of CO2, through its capture, possible cleaning, to the production of useful products such as dimethylether, methanol, and carbonated cement prefabricates. The comprehensive case study presents the research results of an international team established within the "CCS-CCU technology for carbon footprint reduction using bio-adsorbents" (BIOCO2) project.
