🌍 A delegation from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and its partners, including The University of Tokyo (UTokyo), Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-Just), and Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), visited Egypt as part of the pipeline project, “The Project for Utilization of Agricultural Wastes for Plastic Alternative Productions to Establish a Circular Economy,” scheduled for implementation in April 2025. During the visit, UNIDO facilitated meetings with various relevant stakeholders to advance sustainable solutions in Egypt through agricultural waste utilization. Attendees included: Prof. Mitsuo Yamamoto - International Program in Agricultural Development Studies (IPADS), UTokyo; Mr. Kazunao Shibata - Deputy Director General, JICA; Ms. Ai Koga - Deputy Director, JICA; Mr. Teppei Okano - JICA Expert; Mr. Tetsukazu Yahara - Research Supervisor, JST; Mr. Toshiya Sato - Staff, JST; Mr. Ashraf Mabrouk - Chief Program Officer, JICA Egypt; Ms. Riham Maher - Program Officer, JICA Egypt; Ms. Yoshiko Sano - Project Formulation Advisor, JICA Egypt; Prof. Mohamed Gepreel - Professor, E-JUST; Prof. Ahmed Abdel-Mawgood - Professor, E-JUST. During their visit to Egypt, the delegation engaged with key stakeholders, including Eng. EU and UNIDO Sign a New Project Addressing Trade Growth and Sustainable Industrial Development in Egypt The Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, and the Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Affairs and Minister of Industry and Transport witnessed the signature of a new project funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), titled " European Union support to trade, industry, growth and rapid market access (TIGARA)". The signing ceremony took place on 19 August 2024 at the premises of the Ministry of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation in Cairo, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing cooperation between Egypt, the EU, and UNIDO. The signing ceremony witnessed the participation of key stakeholders, including the European Union Delegation to Egypt, UNIDO, and high-ranking officials from various Egyptian ministries involved in the project. With a total budget of EUR 8,000,000, TIGARA is designed to enhance the competitiveness and efficiency of Egypt’s industrial private sector leading to foreign and local trade growth, with a special focus on small and medium enterprises (SMEs). TIGARA is funded by the European Union with a contribution from the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development and is implemented by UNIDO over the period of 5 years. The project is structured around two main axes: one supports the Egyptian eco-system to foster SMEs competitiveness, and another provides technical assistance to the private sector to enhance its competitiveness. The major axis of intervention is the improvement of the industrial policy framework, enhancing institutional capacities, upgrading the national quality infrastructure system and boosting SMEs' competitiveness through cluster development, compliance with market access requirements, and the adoption of digital technologies. Companies supported must be recycling at least 1,000 metric tons of biomass annually. Within the UNIDO - World Food Programme Global Partnership Framework, under the project “Strengthening Climate Resilience and Food Security through Livelihood Enhancement and Rural Innovation” UNIDO, in cooperation with DCode continued its efforts under Output 2 for capacity building, conducting the 2nd and 3rd rounds of training in Luxor and Qena with 10 Community Development Associations (CDAs). The training spanned three consecutive days, focusing on developing a sustainable business model for Business Development Services (BDS) units that can serve their communities and generate income. In #Luxor, after intensive workshops, the CDAs embarked on field visits to two successful CDAs that offer BDS and own sun-drying facilities; CEFD and Mataana organization in Esna which is also involved in exporting, providing a valuable learning opportunity for the participants. These visits were instrumental in showcasing how CDAs can engage in economic activities that not only serve their communities but also create revenue streams. In #Qena, the CDAs engaged in a productive discussion with REDEC, a well-established BDS unit known for its diverse economic activities. This interaction provided insights and practical examples of how a well-structured BDS unit operates, highlighting the potential impact on the community and the income generation for the CDA.
