Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project symbolizes a significant leap towards Tanzania energy independence and sustainable development. With three hydro turbine generator units now fully operational, the station is now feeding more than 700 MW to the Tanzanian National Grid. In celebration of the third hydro turbine generator unit’s connection to the Tanzanian power grid, Honorable Dr. Doto Biteko, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy has visited the project site accompanied by high level government officials. They were welcomed at site by senior management from the Joint Venture of The Arab Contractors and ELSEWEDY ELECTRIC including Wael Hamdy, Senior VP and CEO of E&C Sector, Ibrahim Qamar, Director of East Africa, Darem DEBSI, Project Director, and Mohamed Zaky, Deputy Project Director. During his visit, Honorable Dr. Doto Biteko remarked, “Tanzanians have invested their taxes into securing a stable and sufficient electricity supply, and it is our duty to deliver this service to meet their expectations. Once we address the immediate electricity issues, our focus will shift to stabilizing the infrastructure for electricity transportation, ensuring a robust and reliable distribution network. With our current generation capacity and the availability of electricity, we are poised to make significant progress.” Dr. Biteko praised TANESCO and TECU for their exceptional project management, and extended his gratitude to the Joint Venture of The Arab Contractors and ELSEWEDY ELECTRIC for their exemplary execution thus far. He expressed confidence in the timely completion of the project, emphasizing the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders. “The successful connection of turbines nine, eight, and now seven to the national grid emphasizes this commitment. This addition of 705 MW, from an eventual total of 2,115 MW when all nine turbines are operational, signifies the transformative impact of JNHPP on Tanzania’s energy landscape. This collective goal to complete the project on schedule highlights the dedication and hard work of all parties involved, promising a brighter future for the people of Tanzania”, he added. "We continue to deliver on our commitments. Despite numerous challenges, we began supplying robust power to the Tanzanian grid on February 17th, 2024. Shortly thereafter, we bridged the gap in TANESCO’s power demand and proceeded afterward to replace diesel-fired power with reliable green energy. This not only marks the end of load shedding in Tanzania but also paves the way for TANESCO’s carbon neutrality.
