The African Energy Commission (AFREC) is a specialised energy agency of the African Union (AU), in charge of coordinating, harmonising, protecting, conserving, rational exploitation, commercialising and integrating energy resources on the African continent. Member States, continental and regional African institutions and international organisations use the energy statistic datasets as their main source to plan and inform decisions on energy development, production and supply on the continent. Up to 2018 AFREC has been focusing mainly on the collection of energy statistics through dedicated National Focal Points (NFP) who are appointed by the Ministers responsible for energy from all 55 AU Member States. As part of its mandate, AFREC is working closely with development partners and AU agencies on the continent and abroad, to ensure an effective continental energy information system is developed, integration of energy resources, strengthening national energy information systems and developing a comprehensive continental energy action programme for the development of the whole Africa's energy sector and in response to Africa's Agenda 2063, in realisation of delivering 'The Africa We Want' and the SDGs is achieved. AFREC welcomes all development partners who wish to collaborate on feasibility research/studies in 5 African Regions namely: Southern, Eastern, Western, Central and Northern in: Renewable energy in general, Bio-energy, Oil and Gas, Energy Efficiency, Energy Transition and the Africa Energy Information System. We work with Regional Economic Communities (RECs), Africa Regional Power Pools who are responsible for accelerating energy development at regional level for regional integration purposes, resources sharing and development of regional energy sector, in view of achieving continental energy efficiency and sustainable development.

🌍 AFREC Successfully Holds First In-Person Methane Mitigation Training for Algerian Oil and Gas Experts The African Energy Commission (AFREC) has successfully completed its first-ever in-person methane mitigation training for Algeria’s oil and gas sector experts! The event took place from 23 to 25 September 2024 at the Sonatrach Training Institute in Boumerdes, Algeria. 👷♂️👩🔬 Thirty-five participants, including engineers and scientists from Sonatrach, Sonelgaz, and the Ministry of Energy and Mines, gathered to learn essential skills to detect, measure, and mitigate methane emissions across the oil and gas value chain. Methane is responsible for at least 30% of the current rise in global temperatures, making this training timely and vital for Algeria, a leading oil and gas producer. 📡 The training also explored cutting-edge tools such as satellite technology for methane detection and advanced mitigation strategies. Participants received certificates recognizing their achievements. We extend our gratitude to the dignitaries from the Ministry of Energy and Mines, the Sonatrach Training Institute, UNEP, and Carbon Limits for their collaboration in making this training a success. AFREC remains committed to supporting AU Member States in decarbonizing the oil and gas sector for a sustainable future. For more information, contact AFREC at [email protected]. Energy statistics and balances constitute the basic description of the energy system in a country. They are a cornerstone for tracking clean energy transitions and are also essential for monitoring the broader impacts of energy use – including the implications for energy security. To design and implement the energy policies that support sustainable socio-economic development, access to energy for all, and the achievement of climate goals, countries need reliable, robust and timely data. With this aim, the African Energy Commission (AFREC) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) have been organizing events training over thousands of professionals from Africa and beyond to support their respective data collections. AFREC and IEA have been also working bilaterally with national stakeholders to assess data gaps in all demand sectors and fuels, and to provide short- and long-term recommendations to improve national energy data. Clean Cooking Webinar Series Invitation>> Access to clean cooking remains a major challenge for Africa with the continent accounting for 42% of the world population, about 1 billion people, without access to clean cooking technologies and fuels. According to the African Energy Commission (AFREC), biomass use mainly for charcoal and firewood, accounts for 51% of the total primary energy consumption in the continent. In most African homes, biomass accounts for around 85% of their entire energy needs, except for North Africa that relies of gas with biomass representing 5%. The webinar series is to raise awareness on the clean cooking challenge in Africa, and using case studies provide practical recommendations on how to address the challenge. The recommendations are part of the “Sustainable Scaling: Meeting the Clean Cooking Challenge in Africa” prepared through a partnership between AFREC, the Modern Clean Cooking Services (MECS) and the Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) of the World Bank. In line with its mandate, AFREC has established and maintained the African Energy Information System (AEIS) since 2012, which allows collection and validation of African countries' energy statistics through the use of questionnaires, and disseminates these statistics through publications to make it available to African Union Member states, continental institutions, regional organizations, the international organizations, Investors, academia, etc. The datasets are also available on the AFREC webpage. However, despite AFREC’s work to improve the production of energy statistics in Africa, it is clear that many African Union Member States are still facing some serious challenges to publish Energy statistics on a regular basis. Considering this, AFREC has engaged a team of experts to develop a Comprehensive Strategic Plan for the improvement and harmonization of Energy Statistics and Energy Information Systems in Africa for 2025 to 2030. The strategy is a crucial step forward in developing African energy statistics and will need to be owned by all energy statistics stakeholders in Africa. To help achieve this it is important that everyone has an opportunity to input to the development of the strategy and the associated action plan. So, if you have an interest in energy statistics for Africa, it would be helpful if you can spare a few minutes to complete the survey below. English https://lnkd.in/dc_k63X2 French https://lnkd.in/dBwvcVHE If you can share the survey with your networks to widen the input, that would be immensely helpful.
