About

Due to the Industrial Revolution there has been a shortage in copper.  To allow for further progress, some aristocrats founded the Empire Space Company, which is tasked to mine copper in space.

You play as a commander of such a mission and have the task to mine 5 t of copper ore before running out of energy or oxygen, get poisoned by carbon dioxide or have your rocket disintegrate due to wear.

Controls

The game is played with the Mouse; ESC or BACKSPACE lets you access the In-Game Menu and "F" toggles full screen.

How to Play

The future route the drill will take can be set by hovering the mouse over the desired destination tile. After left clicking, the route is set and the drill will move to the destination, mining the ore along the way.

The refinery will process caloricum ore into energy and potassium into decarbonizers – but only if there are workers assigned and the processing rates are set above zero. All of these parameters are manipulated by sliders in the "Control Panel".

If the carbon dioxide concentration in air is higher than your liking, select in the "Control Panel" the weight of decarbonization liquid you desire and apply it by pressing the "Decarbonize" button. You can also manipulate how fast the machines are running, which impacts the productivity. However, keep a close eye on the resources or otherwise you might run out or exceed the limits, which ends the game immediately.

Game Jam Theme

This game was made for the Honest Jam VII. The theme "Nostalgia" was used in three ways:

  • "Child hood memories": dsacre grew up with Jules Vernes' novels ("20000 Leagues under the Sea", "Mysterious Islands", etc.) and the related movies from the 1950s, always wanting to play a game like these works of art (and when grown up, make a game like this). Milatur used to play "LEGO Rock Raiders" as a kid, which also gave some inspirations.
  • "Blast from the Past": dsacre was co-author of the original game which was developed as an university assignment with pure html/JavaScript (as per rules of the assignment) within a month by four people. Always wanting to improve the game afterwards, the Honest Jam VII's theme seemed to be the perfect excuse to do so. How hard could it be to rewrite the game in a decent game engine with now two well versed programmers within a week? After a peek in the messy JavaScript it turned out that the game was way more complex than dsacre remembered. And then, the game engine of choice threw some curve balls... So the game is still not the way it was intended.
  • "Easter Eggs": Some references/nods to history, movies and (video) games. Can you find all of them?

WARNING

This was a test project for us to explore Godot 4.3 and its new Tile Map Layer feature. It was quite an adventure, so the game is by far neither finished nor bug free!

Known Issues

  • Requires a screen with 16:9 aspect ratio. Otherwise the Tile Map is not correctly located.
  • Sometimes the drill gets stuck. This usually happens after clicking when the drill is already moving.
  • The drill movement speed is not correlated with the machine speed.
  • Sometimes the maximum value of the decarbonizer slider is not updated properly.

Changelog of the Project Page

  • 2024-12-16: Cleaned page, added information on "How to Play" as well as the newly found bugs and a page banner
