Drivers licensed in the District of Columbia may submit an application to DC DMV for a limited occupational license following the suspension or revocation of their license. Please provide a letter from your employer, on company stationary or letterhead, addressed to Adjudication Services, certifying your need to have a driver license to maintain your livelihood. A limited occupational license will not be issued to commercial driver license holders.

Your application must include:
- Your driver license number.
- The days and hours of your employment and the address of your worksite.
- If your request is to operate a company vehicle, identify the make and model of the vehicle you will operate.
- If your request is to operate a vehicle to travel to and from work, identify the requested travel time. For example:, 7-8 am and 5-6 pm.
Requests to drive that exceed five days per week and eight hours per day will not be approved. You must live in the District of Columbia to be given consideration for a Limited Occupational License from the DC DMV.

A hearing examiner will review the information presented and make a decision based on applicable District of Columbia traffic laws and regulations. You will be notified in writing of the examiner’s decision within five business days of your submission.
If you are granted a Limited Occupational License, you must pay two separate fees, the driver license fee and the reinstatement fee.
Note: Limited occupational licenses cannot be issued for mandatory revocations as defined by Title 18 DCMR Section 301 or to commercial license holders, additional exclusions are noted in Title 18 DCMR Section 310.7. If your license is revoked or has expired, the renewal fee is assessed; otherwise the duplicate license fee is assessed. The operation of a vehicle outside the timelines authorized by the Limited Occupational License will mean that you are operating after suspension or revocation and may result in your arrest and/or payment of a fine up to $1,000.
