    ``What makes the difference between a normal and an expert IT Operations person?''

    ``How can you upgrade the competences of the normal IT Operations staff to be more expert like?''

    This thesis examines expertise within IT Operations staff. Specifically the following three research questions will be investigated:

    ``What makes the difference between a normal and an expert IT Operations person?''

    ``How can you upgrade the competences of the normal IT Operations staff to be more expert like?''

    ``How can you make sure that your experts develop their skills and thrive?''

    Conclusion (read the report for everything in between):

    The main differences identified were experience, personal commitment and use of intuition.

    To help upgrade the competences of the ordinary IT Operations staff I recommend: let them work with more experienced colleguaes, but make sure that the span between their Dreyfus skill levels are not too wide. Allow the staff to specialise, and make it explicit that procedures can exist in multiple versions according to Dreyfus skill level.

    Regarding the experts: they should also work together with their less experienced colleguaes, though in the role of supervisor.
    Experts should be allowed to work in their expert domain and not be promoted to management positions. If experts are forced to stricty follow procedures their performance drops.
