New project aims to improve alarm management at sea 🌊 A new project under the ShippingLab platform is set to enhance alarm management systems and contribute to increased safety on board ships. When at sea, it’s crucial that a ship’s alarm systems enable the crew to respond effectively, especially in critical situations. A recent report by Lloyd’s Register reveals that the number of alarms on ships has surged by 197% over the past 20 years, yet not all alarms are equally critical. To tackle this challenge, DFDS, Lloyd's Register, Blue Stamp, Aarhus Maskinmesterskole / Aarhus School of Marine and Technical Engineering, Fredericia Maskinmesterskole - Videncenter for Drift og Vedligehold, and the IT-Universitetet i København have joined forces to explore improvements in alarm management. Supported by the Den Danske Maritime Fond, this project will contribute to optimising the design of alarm systems, addressing the increased risk posed by new low-emission fuels, and generating new knowledge that can be used to create common and comprehensive standards for alarm management in the maritime industry. Standards that do not exist today. Marine engineering students and DFDS engineers will test and evaluate various alarm management strategies using advanced simulators, drawing on best practices from industries such as aviation and nuclear.
