We are pleased to announce that our latest article, “Current Trends and Developments in Radiological Assessment of Chronic Pancreatitis,” has been published online in Current Treatment Options in Gastroenterology! This narrative review provides insights into routine radiological imaging, cutting-edge research trends, and the future of advanced imaging techniques for chronic pancreatitis (CP). It highlights the advancements in CP imaging that we have researched and developed over the last 10 years, showcasing the potential of imaging and artificial intelligence to identify biomarkers for early diagnosis, improve staging, and monitor disease progression and treatment effects. For the last three weeks, we have had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Raima Kapi at the Radiology Department. Raima is a radiologist from Kazakhstan who has engaged closely with our clinical specialists in radiology, focusing on liver, pancreas, esophagus, and rectal tumors. During her visit, she has primarily been involved in our research through a collaboration with Mech-Sense, Aalborg University Hospital, working on analyzing pancreatic imaging data. We wish her all the best moving forward in her career.

Mia Solholt Godthaab Brath from the Department of Respiratory Diseases, Aalborg Universitetshospital, recently defended her PhD titled: "Computed Tomography Based Body Composition Assessment - Perspectives for Patients with COPD". She utilized advanced CT scans to analyze changes in body composition and their lung functions in European and Inuit patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). MRI scans for better detection of cholesteatoma. In collaboration with our partners at the ENT department, Suzan Kole, MD, successfully defended her doctoral dissertation entitled: "Clinical and Radiological Studies on Recurrence in Cholesteatoma Surgery with Long-Term Follow-Up." In this project, we used non-EPI DWI for detection and follow-up of patients with cholesteatoma, showing this particular scan technique exhibits an improved management in the diagnosis and post-operative follow-up. Main supervisor was professor, Michael Gaihede, MD, PhD, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery and Audiology, Aalborg Universitetshospital and Aalborg University. Recently, Davide Bertoli successfully defended his doctoral dissertation entitled: PAN-ENTERIC IMAGING OF THE GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT The current diagnosis of gastrointestinal (GI) diseases is inadequate due to complex brain-gut interactions and imprecise symptom localization. Traditional methods offer limited assessment, calling for a comprehensive, pan-enteric approach. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is non-invasive, avoids radiation, and provides extensive data across the GI system, making it a prime candidate for thorough evaluation. This dissertation proposes a novel MRI technique to assess multiple anatomical and functional GI metrics, tested on healthy volunteers and diabetics with GI issues. #collaboration with Mech-Sense, Aalborg University Hospital #mri #radiology #phd

In this brief clip below, our Professor Jens Brøndum Frøkjær and Postdoc Janusiya Anajan Muthulingam are seen presenting our neuromodulation study on chronic diabetic neuropathic pain. Our dear patient, Jørn, is only one of the many patients with impaired sleep quality due to chronic pain. In the current study, we hope to find an analgesic effect of transcranial direct current stimulation and progress towards a deeper understanding of the pathophysiology of chronic neuropathic pain through our examination setup which includes advanced MRI brain scans. Since the beginning of 2024, our two PhD students, Søren Nicolai Frederiksen Hostrup and Surenth Nalliah, have spent time in Bergen, Norway, collaborating with Mohn Medical Imaging and Visualization Centre (MMIV) and Haukeland universitetssjukehus. Furthermore, they attended the course 'Artificial Intelligence and Computational Medicine' at the University of Bergen. Both Søren and Surenth are working on machine learning in their respective projects, focusing on chronic pain treatment prediction and the disease progression of chronic pancreatitis, respectively. External collaboration with other institutions is essential for enhancing our research and for the education of our personnel. We would like to extend our gratitude to MMIV for their warm welcome and significant contribution to our joint ambitions.
