OBEL AWARD

This year, we are proud to have been the official media partners of the OBEL AWARD, an annual recognition which promotes architecture in the service of both people and the planet, and focuses on a unique challenge within the built environment each year. The 2024 award has been granted to Colectivo C733 for their unique achievement in completing 36 public projects across Mexico over a span of just 36 months. Our Editor-in-Chief Christele Harrouk and our Partnership Lead & Events Editor Claire Brodka attended the award ceremony, which was held at Jørn Utzon's Utzon Center in Aalborg, Denmark. "A herculean social architecture initiative led by Mexico City–based Colectivo C733 has been named as winner of the sixth-annual Obel Award. Springing from a competition organized by SEDATU (Mexico’s Secretariat for Agrarian, Land, and Urban Development), Colectivo C733’s 36x36 project involved the design and construction of 36 diverse public spaces—markets, sports facilities, libraries, cultural centers, parks, plazas, and more—located in disadvantaged communities, rural and urban, across Mexico. Colectivo C733 exemplifies the power of collective action and collaborative design to rapidly respond to urgent urban and rural needs.
