NTU participated in the event organized by DG INTPA, “Inequality Marker: Walking the Talk to Address Inequality." On July 3, 2024, NTU took part in the DG INTPA event, "Inequality Marker: Walking the Talk to Address Inequality." This event followed the earlier InfoPoint Hybrid Conference, "Action upon Inequality – What Role for the Inequality Marker?" held in late May 2024, which focused on presenting the Inequality Marker. The July event centered more concretely on evaluating the initial outcomes of the newly implemented marker. During the event, participants discussed the preliminary results of the marker's implementation regarding the quantity of DG INTPA actions aimed at reducing inequality as a significant or main objective and their geographical distribution. Next steps included providing more guidance on applying the marker. The European Economic and Social Committee's use of the marker was highlighted, demonstrating its implementation and relevance in addressing issues more or less directly related to inequality, such as water stress or youth mental health. A notable highlight was the intervention by a Central Asian women's rights and climate activist, who emphasized the need for more data on inequality and shared effective strategies to address inequality from a youth perspective. The importance of humanizing data and using compelling narratives to influence policymakers was also underscored. The event explored how the marker can aid in collecting reliable data on inequality and provide benchmarks for tracking progress. One speaker focused on how the International Labour Organization's recent strategy on combating inequality benefits from the marker's insights and direction. Additionally, the synergies and correlation between the inequality marker and the Agence Française de Développement's (AFD) internal marker were clarified, and the first results of its implementation by AFD were presented. A case study on the LAMAAR project in El Salvador was presented, showcasing the application of the inequality marker and new lessons learned from its application. This included the necessity of designing and implementing Global Gateway interventions with a 360° approach, going beyond mainstreaming, and the necessity to study, co-create, and learn from others to make the best use of available resources. This event was very important as it highlighted concrete applications of the inequality marker and provided priorities and actionable insights for future steps with the objective of reducing inequality. NTU is dedicated to contributing to inequality reduction and looks forward to future collaborations focused on this goal.
