🌍 The #Philippines has huge potential in renewable energies, with 246,000 MW of untapped energy, but the rapid expansion of projects often threatens Indigenous lands. The governments’ National Renewable Energy Programme is pushing for a 50% renewable energy share by 2040, but many projects violate Indigenous rights. 🏞️ Many communities are left out of decision-making. Large dams and energy projects often bring militarization, land grabbing, and human rights violations. #Indigenous Peoples, who have long protected their lands, are sidelined as foreign investors gain more control under new laws. 🌱 A just transition must go beyond clean energy - it must include Indigenous voices and #respect their rights. ✊ As the Indigenous Summit on the #JustTransition approaches on October 8 - 10, it's vital to spotlight Indigenous Peoples in the renewable energy conversation. Let's push for energy solutions that are fair, inclusive, and protective of these communities. Climate justice = Indigenous justice. 👉 Click here to read more about the situation in the Philippines: https://bit.ly/4dyPcS4 #Philippines #JustTransition #climate #TheIndigenousWorld #IWGIA

🇵🇬 Papua New Guinea (PNG) is home to over 840 languages and 600 cultural groups, making it the most culturally diverse country in the world! 🌡️ Climate change is having a profound impact on PNG, affecting its Indigenous communities as well as the country's development and overall well-being. 🌊 Rising sea levels, coastal and land erosion and extreme weather are threatening the lives, health and culture of PNG’s Indigenous communities. 💨 Despite these challenges, PNG remains a contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, mainly due to deforestation, land-use changes, and the energy sector. 🌱 Indigenous communities are key stewards of the land, yet they're often the ones most impacted by environmental degradation and rising global temperatures. 🌍 As we approach #COP16 in Cali, Colombia, we must continue to support Indigenous Peoples and fight for their rights as stewards of biodiversity. 👉 If you want to know more about Papua New Guinea, click here: https://bit.ly/3TOayEf #TheIndigenousWorld #PapuaNewGuinea #IndigenousRights #climate #Indigenous #COP16 #IWGIA

🌿 The Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh continue to face significant challenges, with recent developments highlighting rising tensions and escalating conflicts. These issues have intensified calls for stronger support for the Indigenous Peoples of this region, who are fighting to preserve their land and culture amidst ongoing disputes. Amidst these struggles, the resilience of the Indigenous Peoples shines through. 📚 Our LIFE IS NOT OURS’ book series delves into these challenges, documenting gross human rights violations in the CHT gathered from fact-finding missions, journalist reports, information from different governments and civil society organisations, and from personal accounts of those who were able to escape the area. 📖 The CHT Commission produced these five reports on the situation in the CHT from 1991 to 2000. In light of the current situation, this book series remains crucial. 🔙 #TBT IWGIA’s 2019 #HumanRights report analyzes the sociocultural impacts of two major renewable energy projects in #Kenya: the Lake Turkana Wind Power project and the Olkaria Geothermal Power plants. These projects align with Kenya's #Vision2030, which aims for 100% renewable energy and positions Kenya as a leader in sustainable industrialization. 🇰🇪 While Indigenous communities generally support the shift to #GreenEnergy to combat climate change, they stress that their collective human rights must be respected. Currently, their lands are often treated as open territory up for development and exploit by both the state and private companies. 👉 Read the full publication here: https://bit.ly/4djXJbz #IndigenousPeoples #HumanRights #Kenya #climate

🔙 #TBT This publication provides a summary of the cases presented in the International Seminar that took place in Mexico City in March 2019. 💬 The Seminar has contributed to the discussion around Indigenous Peoples´ #selfdetermination, understood as a legal and political construction but also as a historical and social process. ✊ The right to self-determination is a fundamental #humanright closely linked to the right to autonomy, access to ancestral lands and natural resources, but also to free, prior and informed consent. 👉 Find the full publication here: https://bit.ly/3V8D04y #IndigenousPeoples #WeAreIndigenous #FPIC

📢 The UN Secretary-General’s Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals has called for global action rooted in equity and justice. The final report has laid out principles and recommendations to create urgently necessary change in mineral supply chains: 🌍 It says that “human rights must be at the core of all mineral value chains,” and calls on all actors to protect human rights and Indigenous Peoples' rights. 🌍 It recognizes that we must protect the planet’s integrity, “redouble our efforts to safeguard the integrity of the environment” and reduce consumption to protect the planet. 🌍 It acknowledges that trade rules need to change so mineral-producing developing countries can benefit more from their resources. Crucially, the Panel recognizes that justice requires change. 📢 We now need strong collective action to put these ambitions into practice: inclusive, multi-stakeholder action that heeds the voices of those most affected by mining. We call on governments and companies to follow the Panel’s recommendation to ensure equitable, inclusive and participatory approaches that will leave no one behind. Let’s make it happen! 👉 Read the full CSO response to the Panel's report: https://lnkd.in/eWpQjaUj #JustMinerals #JustTransition #IndigenousRights #IndigenousPeoples #Sustainability #Environment #EnvironmentalJustice #ClimateJustice #HumanRights
