The Danish Association of Low-Impact Coastal Fishers - Producer Organisation (Foreningen for Skånsomt Kystfiskeri-PO, FSK-PO), established in 2014, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Representing fishers using low-impact gear like gill nets and traps, FSK-PO advocates for marine biodiversity and against harmful practices at sea. The association also fights the shuttering of small harbours, arguing that coastal fisheries should lead the green transition in Danish fisheries. Evidence shows that humans were already consuming macroalgae 14,000 years ago, particularly in far eastern countries such as China, Vietnam, Thailand, and Japan. Algae were also on the menu on some European coasts, albeit to a modest extent. In 2020, around 35.1 million tonnes worth USD 16.6 billion were produced worldwide.
