Fish and seafood are the world’s most traded food group. In 2022, nearly 38% of the global production of 184.5 million tonnes entered markets worldwide, and over half of the trade’s value originated from developing countries. Globalisation and market liberalisation have fuelled this trade boom, however, the market expansion also brings challenges, as differing regulations risk product rejections in importing countries. Fishermen armed with assault rifles rescue stranded animals drifting from the Kakhovka area, patrol their territories, and report sightings of naval mines. This isn’t a scene from a thriller; it’s the reality for a fishing cooperative in the Mykolaiv region. Eurofish Magazine continues its series on seafood businesses in Ukraine, exploring how they operate and persevere amid the ongoing war. Latvia's domestic fish production is supported by a range of sources, including both marine and freshwater capture fisheries as well as freshwater aquaculture. Marine fisheries are categorized into high-seas fishery, Baltic Sea offshore fishery (including the Gulf of Riga), and coastal fishery. The country’s aquaculture sector comprises a mix of ponds growing carp and related species in polyculture, pools, and recirculation systems for the growth of high-value species. For many years, Russia has unilaterally set fishing quotas for cod, herring, and sprat in the Baltic Sea, disregarding established international agreements. Lithuania, together with Estonia, Latvia, and Sweden have condemned these unsustainable practices, which undermine the EU Member States' collective efforts to restore the Baltic's marine resources based on scientific recommendations. Four companies in #Croatia farm tuna. Two of them, Pelagos Net Farma and JADRAN TUNA d.o.o., have a common owner and collaborate on some operations. Pelagos not only farms tuna but also catches small pelagics, anchovies and sardines. The tuna and small pelagic activities enable synergies: only the absolute best quality anchovies and sardines are processed into products for human consumption, the rest is fed to the tuna. Salted anchovies, marinated anchovies, salted sardines, and IQF sardines are among the items the company produces for the domestic and international markets, while the bulk of the tuna goes super frozen to Japan. Croatia will be on the cover of the next issue of the Eurofish Magazine. #eurofishmagazine #croatia #fisheries #aquaculture #tuna #anchovies

As part of the meeting with FISH INFOnetwork partners, Eurofish presented the #EUMOFA project to explain how Market data on Fisheries and Aquaculture is managed in Europe. The meeting highlighted the importance of data sharing and addressed the difficulties in obtaining data from some countries. This shows the importance of #EUMOFA in collecting data and the importance of collaboration within industry, research, and governments.
