Why did we see noticeable price drops in the spot market? 📉 Several periods of negative hourly prices dominated the weekend, and the average system price for the week as a whole was just 7.42 EUR/MWh. These are the lowest prices in almost a year at system level.   This is a good example of how the rapid expansion of wind and solar power in the Nordics can cause prices to completely collapse. Spot prices rose sharply in Denmark and southern Sweden We are currently seeing high price differences in the Nordics, a trend that has only intensified over the past week. At the same time, the price level has been low in the northern price areas. Last week: 📈 In Denmark the average price for the week was 94 EUR/MWh. 📈 In Sweden, the average price for the week was 62 EUR/MWh. 📉 The average system price was 21.42 EUR/MWh. 📉 The price level also remained extremely low in the northern price areas. Rising spot prices is largely the result of rising prices in Germany, while wet summer weather is keeping prices down in the northern parts of the Nordics. New uncertainty sends gas prices soaring Rising tensions in the Middle East and escalating fighting between Ukraine and Russia have led to rising gas prices in recent weeks, with the market pricing in more risk premium. Over the last three weeks, European gas prices have risen sharply on the gas exchange TTF: 📈 The daily market: 25% increase 📈 The futures market: 28 % increase 📈 The annual contract: 19 % increase These price increases are, of course, very noticeable, and are the result of both the weather and – especially – geopolitical events that have unfolded over the past few weeks. Developments in the war between Russia and Ukraine are also currently bullish for the gas market.
