Our app and API now use updated 2023 emission factors for Europe 🇪🇺 We have been revamping our calculations and used the latest available datasets to create new emission factors using ENTSO-E and EU-ETS data for 2023. Thanks to the help of contributors, we are now able to use the verified emissions for 286 thermal power plants across Europe to calculate a more precise value. The methodology, the code used for making calculations and a detailed description of changes per country is all available here: https://lnkd.in/gbUkrf5H

🔍 Data insights: A new record for wind and solar in Europe! Renewable energy generation just broke a new record in Europe with wind and solar generation exceeding electricity production from fossil fuels in the last 12 months. ☀️💨 At the end of June 2024, solar and wind generation reached 825 TWh over the last 12 months across Europe, just above all electricity production from fossil fuels over the same period. This marks a new and important milestone in the decarbonization of European grids. While the gap between fossil fuels and renewable energy generation remained constant from 2020 to 2022, it started decreasing significantly during 2023 following the demand destruction provoked by the energy crisis and the surge of gas prices. Read our Electricity Mapped Europe 2023 blog post to learn more about this: https://lnkd.in/dp67CWvw Despite a small rebound at the end of 2023, demand reduction continued in 2024 and led to this remarkable record. 🍃 The journey is however still long before Europe reaches grid decarbonization. Electricity demand will likely increase again in the coming years with the electrification of end-uses. Electrifying energy usage while not ramping up fossil fuel generation will be a major challenge for Europe. ❄️ European grids are also still dependent on fossil fuels to cover increases in electricity demand caused by heating needs, and the coming winter season might once again highlight it.
