During the height of the Red Sea crisis, at the request of a few close customers, we started a simple regular update outlining the changes we saw happening in the North American market: Cape deviations, Panama Canal drought status, deviations, service changes, and general commentary that we found important. We didn't expect it to last more than a few weeks or months. But the majority of recipients (initially very limited) spoke highly of particularly its very tangible and useful structure; and so we've kept it going. We continue to send it out only when it's relevant. No focus on having to do weekly, if there are no interesting developments; and conversely, an upgraded frequency during crises, if we deem it relevant. Long story short; we've just sent out the latest update to those same close customers. And should you wish to read along, you can either join the mailing list or drop by the blog on our website. https://lnkd.in/dsE_JcPZ

We are excited to share the latest edition of our Schedule Reliability Scorecard (SRS), updated with fresh insights into global shipping performance. Our analysis covers over 6,000 active container vessels and 12,000 port calls per month, providing a detailed look into the industry's current state. Key Highlights: 📉 Downward Trend in Schedule Reliability: Q1 saw a decline, with on-time performance dropping from 35% to 27%. Geopolitical issues and infrastructure disruptions are significant factors. 🌟 Top Performing Ports: Guayaquil, Ecuador, ascended to the top spot in our Top 50 Reliable Ports ranking, showing remarkable consistency. 🌏 Regional Observations: Mega-ports like Singapore and Busan are gradually improving but remain outside the top rankings. Shanghai stands out among large ports, securing 26th place. 🚢 Carrier Performance: Maersk retains its lead despite overall declines, while Wan Hai emerges as a new leader in the VSA rankings, highlighting the dynamic competitive landscape. 🔗 Get the full report here: eeSea Schedule Reliability Scorecard https://hubs.ly/Q02yycth0 Thank you for your continued trust and partnership. #Shipping #Maritime #Logistics #PortPerformance #ShippingIndustry #MaritimeNews

Visibility is no doubt going to be one of the main topics at #tpm24. Even though it's often somewhat vaguely used as an umbrella term, it is indeed relevant and timely. At eeSea we believe that almost any sort of visibility - cargo planning and tracking, port optimization just to mention a few - starts with the vessel ETA. And not just a dot on a map (shout out to all you e2e visibility providers...), but accurate long-range vessel forecasts. A key term in visibility ought, in fact, to be #predictability. Predicting and understand what the downstream consequences of vessel delays are. If this resonates with you, we'd love to hear from you. Our very own Lange Feist and Simon Sundboell will be at TPM in Long Beach from tomorrow - feel free to contact them for an introduction and conversation about your needs. #tpm24 #predictability #supplychain #visibility #notadotonamap

A month ago we launched our Schedule Reliability Scorecard (SRS), with a focus on 2023. The main conclusions were that while on-time performance had improved over 2021/2022, volatility remained high and we were not yet a pre-Covid levels. Maersk topped the carrier rankings. We now add our Top 50 Reliable Ports rankings to the SRS. Livorno, Italy regains first place, also held in 2021; with Guayaquil, Ecuador in a strong second place. Several of the mega-ports are struggling. If you're interested in more insights, you can download the full SRS deck (incl global, trade lane and carrier numbers) at the below link. And we're always ready to discuss how these insights might help your business, whether you're a port authority, terminal operator, cargo owner or ocean carrier. The SRS will be a quarterly feature from eeSea. Subscribe to eeSea for updates. #containershipping #supplychains #maritime https://hubs.ly/Q02ltP5T0

Hapag-Lloyd AG and A.P. Moller - Maersk both state that "the ambition is to deliver a flexible and interconnected ocean network with industry-leading reliability" for their new Gemini Cooperation. Maersk further states "The network is designed to achieve above 90% schedule reliability once fully phased in" in their FAQ. Today carriers can't agree on ETAs, how to define an ATA, how to measure carbon emissions, to mention a few. What, then, constitutes industry-leading reliability ? How will they measure and report the 90% ? What is reliability, even ? Introducing eeSea's Schedule Reliability Scorecard. We track and forecast some 6000 active container vessels across 2000 liner services, down to the port event level - that is about 12k port calls / 50k events per month. From bottom-up, we can then aggregate and analyse all that data through various lenses. Today we're publishing our review of 2023. High-level visualizations and commentary on the global developments; two kinds of carrier rankings; trade lane scores; and a description of our methodology. In about a weeks' time, we'll publish our regional review, including a focus on port rankings and berth stays - and we'll also share some thoughts on how far Gemini are from the 90%. For the high-level conclusions (and to know how Maersk and Hapag rank), click the below link to download the presentation. And if you want a more in-depth conversation around how this data could help your business, reach out to us. A good reminder of the historical developments of alliances. And that HL and ML have until now never been in an alliance together. Individual VSAs, yes - but not an alliance.

✔ Big news from the container shipping market and this time not related to the Red Sea Crisis: Hapag-Lloyd will leave THE Alliance and start a partnership with Maersk under the name 'Gemini Cooperation' from February 2025 onward. ✔ This news follows two other important developments on the alliance front in 2023: the announcement of MSC and Maersk in late January 2023 to discontinue the 2M alliance, set to end in January 2025, and the more recent decision of the EC to terminate the Consortia Block Exemption Regulation (CBER) from April 25, 2024 onward. ✔ As things stand now, by 2025, MSC will remain the only large container shipping line not being part of an alliance. In early 2024, MSC operated a fleet (owned and chartered) of about 5.6 million TEU, with an order book of an additional 1.4 million TEU. ✔Given the recent events, the relevant pages dedicated to alliances on the website of our book #port #economics #management and #policy (Theo Notteboom, Thanos Pallis and Jean-Paul Rodrigue) have been updated: https://lnkd.in/eS-HCP_p

The Gemini Cooperation is born ! The news cycle will be buzzing, but what will happen next - in the board rooms as well as with the liner networks ? Here are our high-level initial thoughts...

Se profil for Simon Sundboell, grafik

    Founder of eeSea

Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd are forming the Gemini Cooperation, a new global container shipping alliance. The news is out and will be quoted in days and weeks to come. The obvious conclusion is that THEA can't survive without HL - and so ONE, HMM and YML are scrambling right now. There's got to be frantic phone calls between Singapore, Seoul and Taipei as we speak ! Even CMA and Cosco will be looking over their shoulders in OCEAN; do they want to snap up the remaining THEA carriers, and if so what's 'the price' ? Or are we looking at a break-up of OCEAN, too (less likely, but possible). Will we see a two-alliance world, with MSC on the side ? Will this spur another round of M&A activity ? I personally think ML and HL are a good cultural and operational match, so that's not too bad. What'll happen next is the usual stuff: -- This bomb will be quoted everywhere, people will spin stories - but in essence we're blind, can only guess at what'll happen next. So not much meat on that bone -- ML HL will start drafting their network, and their respective divorces from 2M and THEA will firm up. Maybe sooner rather than later; waiting is generally not a good idea here -- Network details will drip out. First draft network and service details, then rotations and port pairs (with some TBN's), then firming up of terminals and berth windows, then actual vessel assignments, and thus the first departures -- Over the coming weeks and months the THEA impact and reactions will come out, and they will go through the same cycle As always, the eeSea platform will be right there with up-to-date information on the latest developments. On a related note: the terminal operators everywhere will of course also view this with keen interest. And both anticipation and trepidation. In these reshuffles you can lose or gain big. Terminals who've had a rough time recently, with loss of services, could suddenly see an opportunity to regain; and terminal operators with a good book of business could lose significant chunks. So they'll be looking to get into the carrier head offices asap and tying up local, regional and global business. And right now they'll be nicely asked to wait until the carrier themselves have some sort of clarity...! #containershipping #hapag-lloyd #maersk #supplychains #gemini #maritime https://hubs.ly/Q02gLz_J0

This week we presented our first webinar of 2024: "Making sense of the blanks". We were happy to see participants from five continents, and wanted to share the recording and the presentation with you here on LinkedIn. -- We touched on the the Red Sea crisis; and how it impacts the pre-Lunar New Year export rush from Asia. -- We outlined how we at eeSea produce granular and accurate schedule data, in order to analyse trade capacity and blank sailings. -- We discussed some potential medium-term scenarios involving routing more permanently around the Cape of Good Horn; and the extra vessel capacity that could absorb. -- And finally we saw how the Gunvor Maersk has transited the Suez Canal four times (!) in less than a month... You can click the below link to see a few bullets from the presentation, and download the full material.

“You’re in a world that’s going increasingly from American-controlled unipolar to multipolar globally. You’re going to have a much more fraught supply chain, and every BCO [beneficial cargo owner], importer, exporter, and logistics provider is going to have to deal with that going forward. The Houthis are just one step in that.” Sadly that statement has proven too close for comfort, seeing that just today a tanker was hijacked by Iran in the Gulf of Oman. That and the Bab-el-Mandeb attacks are certainly linked, and ratchets up the geo-political stakes. Thank you for a truly pleasant conversation Rachel, FreightWaves. We talked much broader than what you can read here, but that was the beauty of it.

Practically everything you buy today has been optimized to be as cheap and abundant as possible. This isn't possible without global supply chains... and peaceful oceans for container shipping. That comfortable norm is starting to change, as the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea show. Check out my latest for FreightWaves, with insights from Simon Sundboell, Anders Schulze, Peter Sand, and Gregory Brew.
