DTU Offshore - Danish Offshore Technology Centre // R&D centre with a central position in the energy transition.

Om os

DTU Offshore - Danish Offshore Technology Centre is Denmark’s national R&D centre for offshore technologies and holds a central position in the energy transition. We develop research-based technology solutions for the offshore industry in the North Sea. Our research encompasses carbon storage, digital solutions for the offshore sector, produced water management, well and platform maintenance, recovery of remaining oil and gas resources, and efficient and responsible abandonment of depleted oil and gas fields. The centre is a public-private partnership between DTU, University of Copenhagen, Aarhus University, Aalborg University, and GEUS. We gather teams across the network and utilize the cutting-edge expertise of each partner institution. In addition, we are in constant dialogue with industry partners and researchers outside the center. We see this network approach as the best way to pioneering research that makes a difference in the field. The centre is located at DTU and financially backed by the DUC partners: TotalEnergies, Noreco, and Nordsøfonden. The center was formed in 2014.

  • The global energy transition is bringing new challenges, especially where water and energy systems meet. There are key issues to be addressed in the water-energy nexus: e.g. resource limitations, environmental impacts, and changing regulations. The Danish Offshore Technology Conference 2024 will dive into the future of the North Sea sharing new insights into the offshore energy transition. In the session Water-Energy Nexus in the Energy Transition: Unveiling the Challenges experts will share perspectives in the major obstacles in managing water use across traditional and new energy sectors. Tomás Bredariol, Energy and Environmental Policy Analyst at International Energy Agency (IEA) will provide a global overview of the Water-Energy Nexus and discuss the outlook for water use in energy transitions. Clean energy can help to ease the water crisis, but not all low carbon technologies have low water needs. The presentation will conclude with strategies to better manage water-related impacts in extractive industries, including measures to reduce water needs and minimize water pollution. • Offshore wind technology recently celebrated 33 years since its first installation. Initially, offshore wind energy was a costly but promising alternative to fossil fuels due to high installation and operational costs. However, the competitive pressure caused by the general shift around 2015 on most markets from fixed feed-in tariffs to competitive auctions dramatically reduced these costs, making offshore wind a competitive energy source. The European Union has ambitious plans for offshore wind expansion in the North Sea, aiming for 350 GW of installed capacity by 2050, which could supply up to one-third of the EU's electricity needs. The UK is poised to achieve an even higher share of its electricity from offshore wind. Despite these advancements, significant challenges remain, including slow permitting processes, underdeveloped grid infrastructure, and supply chain bottlenecks. At the Danish Offshore Technology Conference 2024, Henrik Stiesdal, CTO and founder of Stiesdal, will explore these issues and propose potential solutions to facilitate the continued growth and integration of offshore wind energy in the North Sea region. • Postcard from Norway! Our colleague Kristine Wille Hilstrøm sends a greeting from ONS, one of the world's largest energy sector events. With more than 70.000 participants, she has had a busy couple of days networking with old colleagues, current collaborators, and new connections. "ONS is an excellent meeting place. It is great to get updated on novel technologies as well as various innovative projects in the industry. All while seeing where DTU Offshore can assist the various market players in energy", says Kristine Wille Hilstrøm. In connection with ONS, Kristine also visited NORCE Norwegian Research Centre with CODA - Centre of Decommissioning Australia, delegates from Western Australia Industry, and Net Zero Technology Centre. Here, she got an introduction to Ullrigg Test Centre, the world's most advanced and realistic drilling simulator environment, and a tour of their plug and abandonment lab. #ONS #energytransition DTU - Technical University of Denmark

  • Registration for the Danish Offshore Technology Conference 2024 is open! On November 19, 2024, we'll dive into the future of the North Sea addressing scenarios for the Offshore Energy Transition. The North Sea holds tremendous potential for energy production. However, one of the key challenges in the green transition is how to optimize regions such as the North Sea for energy production while respecting the environment and other industries that depend on it. The day will feature various keynote speakers who will share their insights into the offshore energy transition with a focus on energy policy, innovation and technology, e.g. Director-General for Energy at the European Commission, Ditte Juul Jørgensen, Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities, Lars Aagaard, CTO and founder of Stiesdal, Henrik Stiesdal, and the International Energy Agency (IEA). Additionally, there will be technical deep-dive sessions with time to explore research, review data, and results in areas including offshore energy infrastructure, subsurface storage of CO2, and offshore water management. The conference also provides great networking opportunities with the Brella 1:1 matchmaking tool and the always popular poster session. 📆 November 19, 2024 📍 Tivoli Hotel & Congress Center, Copenhagen Learn more about the programme and register: https://lnkd.in/dXFGWvUk #TC24 #offshore #energytransition #technology DTU - Technical University of Denmark Video: 4V Films

  • Last chance to join our Summer School next week from August 19-23, 2024 and gain valuable insights into Denmark's leading CO2 storage projects, Bifrost and Greensand, funded by EUDP - Det Energiteknologiske Udviklings- og Demonstrationsprogram. Named after the mythical rainbow bridge, symbolizing the connection between offshore and onshore CO2 storage solutions, Project Bifrost, has performed the groundwork necessary for transporting and storing CO2 in the Harald field: from the CO2 capture on land to the transportation and storage offshore(capture was not part of the Bifrost). With the collaboration of industry experts and DTU’s academic strengths, Bifrost is at the forefront of CCS innovation for a safe and sustainable energy transition in Denmark. Project Greensand is Denmark's most mature CO2 storage project, targeting storage of up to 1.5 million tonnes per year by 2025/2026 and up to 8 million tonnes per year by 2030. The project's current phase involves capturing CO2 from the INEOS Oxide factory in Belgium, transporting it in special containers to the Nini West platform, and injecting it into the sandstone reservoir. Supported by a consortium of 23 partners, led by INEOS and Wintershall Dea, Greensand is poised to become a cornerstone of Denmark’s climate strategy. What to expect: - In-depth case studies: Explore challenges and opportunities in CCS through the POV of projects Bifrost, Greensand, Northern Lights, and CO2RYLUS. - Expert lectures: Gain insights from industry and academia experts in CCS-related topics such as CO2 capture technology, reservoir simulations, wellbore integrity, geomechanics, CO2-induced corrosion, containment, and more. - Interactive sessions: Discuss and present your CCS-related work with academia and industry experts. - Field trip: The Summer School also includes visiting the Wastelab at Vestforbrænding, which produces district heating and electricity by burning residual waste. This is a unique opportunity to be at the cutting edge of CO2 storage technology and contribute to Denmark’s ambitious climate goals. Register no later than Friday, August 16, before 10 AM and be part of a transformative journey toward a sustainable future: https://lnkd.in/dYRF9mJw #summerschool #ccs DTU - Technical University of Denmark Hamid Nick Carlos A.
