 🛰 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀! 🛰    Space technology is gaining momentum in solving environmental challenges, leveraging other technologies such as AI and machine learning. Space technology and Earth Observation data are also part of many of DHI’s solutions to water-related challenges, and we love to share stories of how we work.💧🌍 This time, it was a group of students in the Earth and Space Physics and Engineering programme from DTU - Technical University of Denmark, who paid us a visit to learn more about how we use EO data in combination with other technologies. Our colleague Paul Senty shared some of his experiences from his industrial PhD programme on mapping methane-emitting areas from space, and Kenneth Grogan talked about how we apply space technology and EO data to solve water and environmental challenges throughout the world. The students also got a tour of our test facilities. We hope our visitors were inspired to see how we apply science and technology to solve real-world challenges. Who knows? Maybe one or more of these students will end up doing a PhD or Postdoc at DHI, applying space technology, EO data or AI to solve the world’s water challenges. 𝐃𝐇𝐈 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐉𝐋 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐇𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐡 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐨𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐄𝐫𝐢𝐞 𝐛𝐲 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐌𝐈𝐊𝐄 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐃𝐇𝐈 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 DHI Canada, through SJL, will work with the Essex Region Conservation Authority under grant funding from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) Great Lakes Freshwater Ecosystem Initiative (GLFEI) to restore this critical marsh habitat. The marsh is a designated Provincially Significant Wetland and covers a total area of nearly 1,000 acres. Historically, the marsh was a thriving ecological system providing critical habitat to aquatic endangered species and numerous migratory bird populations, while providing ecosystem services such as water quality benefits. Due to the significant cumulative stresses imposed on the Hillman Marsh from a combination of impaired coastal processes related to human development and climate-related impacts including higher lake levels, much of the ecological value of this historically significant lacustrine system has been lost or is threatened. In early September, the team at DHI Canada kicked off this multi-year project with a comprehensive field campaign including deployment of wave monitoring instrumentation in the marsh. Our team will use the MIKE 21 FM Spectral Waves/Hydrodynamics/Mud Transport and MIKE 3 Wave FM models to assess the marsh baseline and to develop nature-based hybrid design solutions to protect and restore the marsh habitat. Our numerical models will integrate vegetation dynamics and morphological processes to understand the response of the system to future climate stressors and the proposed solutions. The final concept will be tested and refined as a 2D physical model in Federal Ocean, Coastal and River Engineering Research Centre (grant requirement). We look forward to making a positive impact in the communities we call home, using our expertise in all water environments and industry-leading MIKE products and digital solutions.
