Agreena x UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) farm visit recap👇 We took UKGBC members to learn all about regenerative agriculture direct from one of our AgreenaCarbon farmers, Rob Waterston. Three themes emerged throughout the day: 🪱 Soil - Rob’s dug-up pit was the undisputed highlight of the day, giving everyone a practical understanding of #SoilCarbon and the importance of residue management 👌 Integrity - Gerald’s presentation on #dMRV and soil sampling showcased how we match farmers’ data and satellite information with ground-truthing and soil sampling 💷 Finance - everyone was keen to learn how carbon financing fits into the farmer's incentive stack and the how tenured farmers can participate A particular shoutout must go to the Puxley family who were incredible hosts! What is soil sampling? 🌱 ➡️ The process of taking a sample of soil from a field, and sending it to a lab to measure a range of chemical, physical and biological properties. ⬅️ At Agreena, we analyse cores of soil to calculate their organic carbon content. Our soil sampling programme involves expert partners across the world, including Agricarbon and ZEMLEROB LLC. They visit fields on different farms, collecting soil cores - a cross section of soil in a metre-long narrow cylinder - from carefully selected locations in each field. Each core is then analysed to assess the following: 💨 Soil organic carbon - the most important metric, that gives the percentage of organic carbon in that sample 🧱 Bulk density - the density of soil in a given area 🏜️ Soil texture - measured in three categories: sand, silt and clay Once the results are in, we share the data with the relevant farmer and use it to calibrate our carbon models. The three measurements help us calculate the all-important metric - carbon stock. By taking samples from a variety of regions, climates and soil types, and measuring the change over a five year period, we can accurately model the carbon sequestration change across all farms in the AgreenaCarbon programme. Since the programme launched in 2021, our soil sampling campaigns have grown by more than five times, and we have analysed more than 20,000 soil samples to date. Agreena is now one of the largest soil carbon samplers in Europe. 🔮 What does the future of regenerative agriculture look like? With more than 60% of European soils currently in a poor condition, action is urgently needed to end the soil health crisis. ⏰ The time to invest in natural climate solutions like regenerative agriculture is now. In its latest report, IETA has highlighted the pressing need for corporates to support natural climate solutions (NCS), before their effectiveness is severely diminished. 🗣️ ‘The potential for nature to support mitigation decreases after 2030 as ecosystem functionality and natural carbon sinks pass crucial tipping points due to land conversion’ The new report, ‘The urgent need to finance natural climate solutions’, also reveals that NCS are more effective at mitigating emissions than other options in the market. 🗣️ ‘The mitigation potential of NCS is higher relative to other abatement options currently available.’ 🌱 Regenerative agriculture is one of these solutions.
