#Italy's approved support scheme will help offshore wind take off Italy has gained significant attention after approving a new state-aid support scheme for offshore wind development in August 2024, targeting to allocate 3.8 GW of capacity from 2024-2028 through at least three support auctions. This is a major step for offshore wind in Southern Europe, as regulatory approvals are still pending in the neighboring countries Spain, Greece, and Portugal. The Italian market has attracted many developers, both international and local players, with over 90 announced offshore wind projects. An insightful and inspiring week in South Korea Last week Aegir Insights’ VP Business Development Matthew Delany and Head of Engagement and Advisory David V. visited South Korea to connect with both existing and potential clients, and to participate in the 12th Asia Offshore Wind Day in Busan. At the conference David presented a global #marketoutlook and shared insights on how the offshore wind industry is responding to a turbulent year in 2023. While coping with higher cost levels, the industry is seeing auctions being more calibrated to this new cost reality. To close the conference, Matthew moderated the senior leader panel session, featuring esteemed panelists like David Jones from RWE and Jonathan Spink from Copenhagen Offshore Partners. The discussions revealed a shared optimism about the future of offshore wind in #Korea, especially with the new offshore wind roadmap. While it’s a positive step forward, there’s still work to be done, particularly around establishing transparent auction rules and setting appropriate ceiling prices to ensure long-term success for the industry. How far could we take #fixedbottom foundations? With industry still awaiting evidence of a floating cost out on commercial scale, partly due to delays in technological advancements and supply chain developments, developers are looking for creative ways to commercialize their sites. On 3 September, the UK Contract for Difference (CfD) Allocation Round 6 (AR6) concluded, where a record-high budget resulted in 5.3 GW of capacity awarded – but with 1.6 GW being re-bids from previous rounds. At what price could you generate green hydrogen from #Denmark's ongoing offshore wind auction sites? Last week, Aegir Insights showcased results from Aegir #Integrate, an advanced solution for investment modelling of hybrid offshore wind projects. This solution has been developed in collaboration with Vattenfall, DTU - Technical University of Denmark, and Energy Cluster Denmark under the REALISE Innovation Project. The project was funded via the Danish Energy Agency’s EUDP fund and had a closing event last week after a three-year development. Through the collaboration, Aegir Insights extends its product offerings to include capabilities in investment modelling of #hybrid offshore wind projects, which could include coupling with other generation sources such as #solar and #onshore, as well as #greenhydrogen production or #energystorage. Hybrid offshore wind projects are of growing importance, with several markets now requiring ‘integration’ initiatives in auctions. Aegir Integrate has already been used to analyze several Northern European markets, including #Denmark, #Germany and #Netherlands, that are leading the way on integration initiatives. At the closing event last week, we presented the key results demonstrating Aegir Integrate’s application to a real-world business case, using the Danish #auction as a case study.
