Building a network of scholars working on the responsible development and use of AI in Africa.
Info
The transnational nature of AI technology platforms makes the ethical and application of AI a global concern. Because AI inherently interacts with its surroundings, cultural, political and environmental differences in context may produce different sets of ramifications (positive or negative) resulting from the use of AI-based technology. There is therefore a growing need to understand how AI may impact or be accepted by society in various regions around the world. To this end, the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana and the Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence (IEAI) at the Technical University of Munich in Germany are building a network of scholars working on the responsible development and use of AI in Africa. The goal is to bring together emerging researchers to discuss and build joint projects on the ethical and social challenges arising at the interface of technology and human values, specifically as it relates to sustainable development. Through a series of virtual and in-person workshops, the network will provide a platform to promote cross regional and interdisciplinary research collaboration. Leveraging #Responsible AI for #Climate Action in #Africa 🔥 In celebration of African Union Day on Saturday, May 25, 2024, the African Technology and Innovation Institutes (ATII) organised the African Day 2024 webinar. The event, themed "Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Climate Action in Africa," provided a virtual platform for participants across the continent to discuss the far-reaching effects of climate change and its specific impact on Africa. Guiding the panel session with her expertise, Dr. Rose-Margaret Ekeng-Itua, a Professor of Engineering and the Founder of ATII, posed a crucial question: How can Africa harness the power of AI to combat climate change and position itself as a global leader in climate action? Prof. Jerry John Kponyo, Principal Investigator and Scientific Director of the Responsible AI Lab and Co-founder of the Responsible AI Network - Africa - TUM/KNUST, emphasised the need for intentionality and planning in Africa's climate action efforts. He called for the development of national AI strategies by all countries and the formulation of an African Union (AU) AI strategy focused on climate action. Prof. Kponyo highlighted the importance of local funding for research institutes to curate Afrocentric datasets and stressed the necessity of collaboration between government agencies, industries, and academia in addressing climate change. He also underscored the importance of developing curricula to fill skill gaps and enhance digital competencies for the next generation. He advocated building capacity and awareness for emerging technologies across formal and informal sectors and suggested integrating AI and robotics into basic education. He referenced the RAIL Robotics Club initiative for Junior and Senior High Schools as a practical step in this direction. "The future belongs to those who can navigate through the digital space, so let's keep building capacity," he remarked. Mr. John Kamara, CEO of Adanian Labs and Chair of the AI Center of Excellence Africa (AICE Africa) discussed the need for Africa to choose the right approach to combating climate change, whether through adaptation or mitigation. He highlighted the importance of collecting conceptual data on the continent and developing human resource capacity. Mr. Karmara stressed the necessity of reengineering the African mindset, investing in research and development, and fostering a culture of innovation to drive policy. Mrs. Nela Duke Ekpenyong, Co-founder of LEGA.C Capital, echoed the sentiment of building capacity and investing in human resources. She emphasised the need to allocate resources for innovation as a primary approach to addressing climate change and its impact on Africa. 📎 https://lnkd.in/eBREYkBb #responsibleai #climateaction #innovation #sustainability

📍 Prof. Jerry John Kponyo advocates for #Responsible AI in all Engineering Fields 📍 In his presentation on Artificial Intelligence (#AI) and the future of #Engineering in Ghana, Prof. Jerry John Kponyo, Principal Investigator and Scientific Director of the Responsible AI Lab (RAIL), indicated that the 4th Industrial Revolution is a digital and an AI revolution where AI must cut across all engineering fields. He made this presentation at the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) 54th Annual General Meeting and Conference themed, “Engineering a Resilient Future: Innovative Solutions for a #Sustainable Ghana” on 20th March 2024 in Accra. Emphasising the importance of non-biased and well-representative data to the AI pipeline, Prof. Kponyo advocated for the need for #Afrocentric datasets in large language models. He said most of the data utilised to train models come from Western sources, which creates bias and lack of inclusion in AI solutions. He noted that AI can impact the economy through job creation, transforming old jobs into new fields, and promoting remote jobs through global competitiveness. Exploring the role of AI in the future of engineering, he said AI algorithms can assist in designing and optimising complex systems, generative design, predictive maintenance, energy efficiency and sustainability, simulation and modelling, and healthcare engineering. “The future of engineering is closely intertwined with the rapid advancements in AI”. Addressing ethical considerations, he said that engineers must address ethical issues, bias in AI algorithms, privacy concerns, and transparency as AI becomes more pervasive. “Responsible engineering involves designing AI systems that align with societal values and respect human rights.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e7_xm_hg Ghana Data Science Summit (IndabaX Ghana) | Deep Learning Indaba | Google | Responsible AI Network - Africa - TUM/KNUST | Ing. In the push towards a green transition to the economy, valuable minerals are coming increasingly into demand. The extraction of these minerals, however, comes at a high cost to the environment and surrounding communities. In a new open-access article with my co-author Svetlana Ikonnikova, we start from this observation to ask how AI is being used to manage the acceleration in the demand for extractives and how we ensure AI is used in an ethical way that benefits communities, societal development, and environmental sustainability in the mining industry. We then outline a way forward to a more ethical and sustainable approach to using AI in the mining sector through multi-objective optimization. I hope this is just the start of this important discussion." "According to estimates by the United Nations Environment group (UNEP, 2016, 2019), African countries alone are home to at least 30 % of the world's mineral reserves. This raises a critical question of whether such developments will bring low-income and resource-rents-dependent economies more prosperity and improvements along multiple axes of sustainability or instead will deepen the often-cited “resource curse”."
