How has the European EV market developed so far in 2024? The latest European Electric Car Study, published by our partner Schmidt Automotive Research, among other topics, covers the Chinese OEM #inventorydump in June, prior to provisional #tariffs being retrospectively implemented from July if EU Council members pass the tariff-hike later this year. VW Group’s predatory pricing move to increase BEV volumes in Q1, in response to the domestic subsidy withdrawal began to see those orders converted to #deliveries preventing greater regional summer losses than expected, following a corporate volume pull-forward during the same period last year. Italy’s June BEV subsidy introduction also assisted the region produce a more stable June than expected. The study also covers significant potential tailwinds for Chinese OEMs on the horizon looking to compensate for tariff headwinds in 2025, among other topics, including the market forecast to 2030. How can e-motors strike the right balance between technology and cost? With rapid advancements in technology development, traditional cost buckets are evolving, making cost discipline a challenge. Roland Bergers ‘Tech Drives’ series delves into #electricmotors, a versatile technology shaping various industries: The decisions on motor topology and differences in functional specifications are key drivers for motor cost premiums. As a #teardownanalysis for one electric motor shows, there is significant cost potential between volume OEMs and new Chinese players. This is mainly due to #costdifferences in magnets, copper, lamination stack and other components. Technical evaluation, Design-to-Cost, cost and function comparison and bottom-up should costing could be suitable tools to achieve the right balance between technology and cost. What are the priorities for the independent aftermarket? Within a positive path for the automotive aftermarket, the #independent aftermarket is called for action to address potential mid-term threads. In fact, the ongoing technology disruptions are expected to have a favorable inertia toward the OE channel, more ready to catch the increased complexity of the repair and the vehicle generated data. The analysis of Nicola Morzenti, Barry Neal, Neury Freitas, Matthieu Simon, Mathieu Bernard, Ron Zheng and Shuai Shi shows that while the #regulation will play a pivotal role for the data accessibility, the whole IAM channel needs to develop new skills and equipment’s to manage the new #vehiclearchitecture. Can the charging network catch up with EV growth? While the number of EVs worldwide will continue to grow in the future, it is important to keep up the pace of charging #infrastructure expansion as well. As the latest EV Charging Index shows, most regions have #improved and have a vehicle-to-charging station ratio of less than three - except for the Middle East. This ratio is important, as it is one of the most important buying criteria for electric vehicles by consumers. Especially an increase in public DC #chargingstations will boost the practicability and thereby acceptance of EVs globally. Are you curious about the most recent trends in EV charging infrastructure? The 2024 EV Charging Index by our platform partner Roland Berger offers detailed insights into infrastructure growth, user expectations and the impact of technological advancements across 32 markets. How can OEMs benefit from Features on Demand? As customer preferences change and the need for OEMs to improve their margins increases, Features on Demand (#FoD) can offer an attractive solution. As analyzed by Elena Yakushkina, Raphaël Bacal, Thibault Chassagne and Andy Tsuno, a shift from #ownership to #usership, including the use of in-car features, can be observed, especially in the North American automotive market. OEMs have the opportunity to further develop their business model through leveraging new revenue streams such as FoDs. Although many users are still hesitant towards Features on Demand due to expensive pricing, #practicality, #flexibility and continuous improvements to vehicle functions are factors in favor of FoDs. Would you like to learn more about the potential of Features on Demand? The latest issue of the Automotive Disruption Radar is dedicated to the topic of FoDs and is available to download for free here: https://lnkd.in/eBvQRSFC #automotivedisruptionradar #FeaturesOnDemand #Digitalisation

How can industry players address the residual value risks for BEVs? #Residualvalues for battery electric vehicles (#BEVs) are falling sharply across Europe, diverging from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Industry players are tackling this challenge differently. While some are increasing #pressure on OEMs to enter buy-back agreements, others are taking even more drastic measures and sell off their BEV fleets entirely. Other #strategies could include adjusting the strategies for BEVs’ second lifecycle, adopting more cautious accounting practices or extending the duration of BEV contracts to stabilize values. A robust three-step approach, developed by Jan-Philipp Hasenberg, Dr. Pascal Lehnen and Hilke Hollander, involving data analytics, clear roles and harmonized governance is crucial for an effective residual value management.
