Neue Sprache, neue Kultur und neue Arbeitsweise

Joanna Barbacka: Yousef, du warst Student an der German Jordanian University (Civil Engineering) und dann u.a. Praktikant bei uns, Wenzel Wenzel, im Bereich Bauüberwachung. Durch den Umzug von Jordanien nach Deutschland musstest du also zusätzlich zu deiner beruflichen Ausbildung eine Art interkulturelles Kommunikationsmanagement machen. Was waren die Herausforderungen dabei und was ist für dich das Wertvollste an dieser Erfahrung? 

Yousef Muwahed: Die Herausforderungen meiner interkulturellen Erfahrung waren vielfältig. Ich musste mich schnell an eine neue Sprache, eine neue Kultur und eine neue Arbeitsweise anpassen. Aber ich denke, die wertvollste Erfahrung war die Chance, meine Fähigkeiten in einem internationalen Umfeld zu entwickeln und zu verbessern. Ich habe gelernt, wie man effektiv mit Menschen aus verschiedenen kulturellen Hintergründen kommuniziert und arbeitet. Außerdem konnte ich mein Wissen und meine Fähigkeiten im Bereich Bauüberwachung erweitern. 

JB: Was denkst du: Bist du bereit, voll beruflich aktiv zu sein, oder möchtest du lieber noch mehr bildungsbezogene Aspekte erreichen? 

YM: Ich denke, ich bin bereit, voll beruflich aktiv zu sein. Ich habe während meines Studiums und meines Praktikums wertvolle Erfahrungen gesammelt und bin bereit, sie in die Praxis umzusetzen. Natürlich werde ich weiterhin an meiner persönlichen und beruflichen Entwicklung arbeiten, um meine Fähigkeiten und Kenntnisse zu verbessern.  

JB: Welche Erfahrungen deiner Berufspraxis bei Wenzel Wenzel waren besonders aufschlussreich und lehrreich? Welche waren purer Spaß?  

YM: Während meines Praktikums bei Wenzel Wenzel habe ich alle meine Erfahrungen als informativ und lehrreich empfunden. Einige Erfahrungen ragen jedoch mehr heraus als andere. Eine besonders lehrreiche Erfahrung war die Zusammenarbeit mit meinem Mentor Philippe Brill, der mir wertvolle Fähigkeiten in den Bereichen Bauüberwachung und Mängelmanagement vermittelt hat. Ich habe auch viel gelernt, indem ich beobachtet habe, wie er die Baustelle leitete und seine Zeit effizient einteilte. Ich lernte auch aus meinen Fehlern und erhielt konstruktives Feedback, was mir half, meine Fähigkeiten zu verbessern. 

Was die Erfahrungen anbelangt, die einfach nur Spaß gemacht haben, so habe ich es besonders genossen, die Baustelle zu besuchen und den Fortschritt des Bauprojekts zu sehen. Es war auch toll, ein unterstützendes und freundliches Team zu haben, das die Arbeitsumgebung angenehm gestaltete. 

JB: Du arbeitest also gerne direkt auf Baustellen. Was ist daran so einzigartig?  

YM: Ja, ich arbeite gerne direkt auf der Baustelle, vor allem in dieser Phase meiner Karriere. Ich sehe es als einen wesentlichen Teil meiner Entwicklung als Bauingenieur an, so viel wie möglich mit der Baustelle zu interagieren, um zu verstehen, wie alles gebaut wird, und praktisches Wissen zu erwerben. Es ist eine einzigartige Erfahrung, die mir ein tieferes Verständnis für die Herausforderungen und die Komplexität von Bauprojekten vermittelt. Aber das heißt natürlich nicht, dass ich die Arbeit im Büro nicht mag. 

JB: Wie würdest du die architektonische und städtebauliche Entwicklung im Mittleren Osten und in Mitteleuropa vergleichen?   

YM: Die architektonische und städtebauliche Entwicklung im Mittleren Osten und in Mitteleuropa unterscheiden sich stark voneinander. Im Mittleren Osten sind viele Gebäude und Städte noch relativ neu und es gibt ein hohes Maß an Modernisierung und Entwicklung. In Mitteleuropa gibt es viele historische Gebäude und Städte, die sorgfältig erhalten und gepflegt werden. Es gibt jedoch auch viele moderne Gebäude und Stadtentwicklungen, die innovativ und nachhaltig sind.  

JB: Wie möchtest du deine erworbenen Kompetenzen einsetzen?   

YM: Für meine berufliche Zukunft erwarte ich, dass ich in einem internationalen Umfeld arbeiten werde, in dem ich meine interkulturellen Fähigkeiten und mein technisches Wissen einbringen kann. Ich hoffe, dass ich in der Lage sein werde, an Projekten zu arbeiten, die einen positiven Einfluss auf die Gesellschaft haben und gleichzeitig meine Karriere vorantreiben.  

JB: Ich denke, du hast auch einzigartige interkulturelle Erfahrungen in Bildungssystemen in verschiedenen Ländern gemacht. Planst du, sie beruflich zu nutzen?  

YM: Ja, ich plane auf jeden Fall, meine interkulturelle Erfahrung beruflich zu nutzen. Ich denke, dass es eine wichtige Fähigkeit ist, in einer globalisierten Welt zu arbeiten, und ich hoffe, dass ich meine Erfahrungen in einem internationalen Umfeld einbringen kann.

YM: Vielen Dank für die netten Worte und vor allem für die Möglichkeit, ein Praktikum in der Bauüberwachung bei der Wenzel Wenzel zu absolvieren. Ich bin sehr dankbar für die wertvollen Erfahrungen, die ich während meines Praktikums in diesem großartigen Unternehmen sammeln konnte. Yousef Muwahed was our intern in construction supervision for six months. He kindly agreed to talk to us about his very special educational and professional situation. As a student at a German Jordanian University, he had the opportunity to make interesting intercultural observations. Like many young people, he had to make important personal decisions quite early on to plan his future. 

Joanna Barbacka: Yousef, you were a student at the German Jordanian University (Civil Engineering) and then, among other things, an intern at our company, Wenzel Wenzel, in the field of construction supervision. So by moving from Jordan to Germany, you had to do some kind of intercultural communication management in addition to your professional training. What were the challenges in doing this and what is the most valuable thing about this experience for you?

Yousef Muwahed: There were many challenges in my intercultural experience. I had to adapt quickly to a new language, a new culture, and a new way of working. But I think the most valuable experience was the chance to develop and improve my skills in an international environment. I learned how to communicate and work effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds. I was also able to expand my knowledge and skills in construction supervision.

JB: What do you think: Are you ready to be fully active professionally, or would you rather achieve more education-related aspects?

YM: I think I am ready to be fully professionally active. I have gained valuable experience during my studies and internship and I am ready to put it into practice. Of course, I will continue to work on my personal and professional development to improve my skills and knowledge.

JB: Which experiences of your work experience at Wenzel Wenzel were particularly insightful and instructive? Which ones were pure fun? 

YM: During my internship at Wenzel Wenzel, I found all of my experiences to be both insightful and instructive. However, some experiences stand out more than others. One of them was working with my mentor, Philippe Brill, who taught me valuable skills in construction supervision and defect management. I also learned a lot by observing how he supervised the site and managed his time efficiently. I also learned from my mistakes and received constructive feedback, which helped me improve my skills.

 As for the experiences that were just fun, I especially enjoyed visiting the site and seeing the progress of the construction project. It was also great to have a supportive and friendly team that made the work environment enjoyable.

 JB: So you enjoy working directly on construction sites. What's so special about that? 

 YM: Yes, I like working directly on construction sites, especially at this stage of my career. I consider it an essential part of my development as a civil engineer to interact with the field as much as possible to understand how everything is built and to gain practical knowledge. It's a unique experience that gives me a deeper understanding of the challenges and complexities of building projects. But of course, that doesn't mean I don't like working in the office.

JB: How would you compare architectural and urban development in the Middle East and Central Europe?  

YM: There are many differences between them. In the Middle East, many buildings and cities are still relatively new and there is a high level of development. In Central Europe, there are many historic buildings and cities that are carefully preserved and maintained. However, there are also many modern buildings and urban developments that are innovative and sustainable.

JB: How would you like to use the skills you have acquired? 

YM: For my future career, I expect to work in an international environment where I can use my intercultural skills and technical knowledge. I hope to be able to work on projects that have a positive impact on society while advancing my career.

JB: I think you've also had unique cross-cultural experiences in educational systems in different countries. Do you plan to use them professionally? 

YM: Yes, I definitely plan to use my intercultural experience professionally. I think it's an important skill to have working in a globalized world, and I hope I can bring my experience to an international environment. 

JB: We wish you much fun and success in achieving your goals.
