His work examines how food networks can help to overcome the separation of food production and consumption. 🌾 ZALF at the German Farmers' Day 2024 in Cottbus 🌾 On June 26th and 27th the German Farmers' Day 2024 took place in Cottbus. We were there and presented our projects LeguNet, DAKIS, NatApp, EROSPOT and SynAgri-PV. Several politicians visited the ZALF exhibition space, including Brandenburg's Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke, Axel Vogel, Brandenburg's Minister for Agriculture, Environment and Climate Protection, Joachim Rukwied, President of the German Farmers' Association, and Henrik Wendorff, President of the Brandenburg Farmers' Association. 📢 New DFG research group FORMULA at the University of Giessen and ZALF is dedicated to the study of agroforestry systems 🌳🌾. https://lnkd.in/eM2kijVa Agroforestry, the combination of trees or shrubs on agricultural land, offers numerous benefits for ecosystems and people. Over the next four years, different working groups within FORMULA will use digital technologies to analyze the impact of these cropping systems on biodiversity, water balance, soil quality and pollination services. The research will take place on experimental plots in Brandenburg and Hesse, where rows of trees were already planted in 2017. The research group is led by Prof. Lutz Breuer from the University of Giessen and involves several ZALF research groups. #Agroforestry #Sustainability #Research #DFG #ZALF

📢 Neue DFG-Forschungsgruppe FORMULA an der Universität Gießen und ZALF widmet sich der Untersuchung von Agroforstsystemen 🌳🌾. https://lnkd.in/eBrZCRnY #Agroforstwirtschaft, die Kombination von Bäumen oder Sträuchern auf landwirtschaftlichen Flächen, bietet zahlreiche Vorteile für Ökosysteme und Menschen. Über die nächsten vier Jahre werden verschiedene Arbeitsgruppen innerhalb von FORMULA digitale Technologien nutzen, um die Auswirkungen dieser Anbausysteme auf #Biodiversität, Wasserhaushalt, Bodenqualität und Bestäubungsleistungen zu analysieren. Die Forschung findet auf Versuchsflächen in Brandenburg und Hessen statt, auf denen bereits 2017 Baumreihen gepflanzt wurden. 🌾 More Wheat, More Fertilizer? 🌾 https://lnkd.in/ex9_TeZM   A recent study published in Nature Plants reveals that nitrogen fertilization in wheat cultivation will need to increase up to fourfold in the coming years to exploit the yield potential of the varieties and feed the growing world population. However, this would negatively impact ecosystems in agricultural landscapes. Researchers from the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) were involved in the study.   The study emphasizes the need to develop strategies to improve nitrogen uptake in wheat crops. Currently, only 48% of the applied fertilizer is absorbed by the plants, with the rest polluting the environment.   Prof. Dr. Frank Ewert, Scientific Director at ZALF and co-author of the study, states: “Our results show that we need to focus primarily on ensuring that nitrogen is available to plants in the soil and can be efficiently absorbed. Given the negative effects of excess nitrogen on the climate and environment, we cannot increase fertilizer application further but must consider alternatives.”   Discussed solutions include breeding wheat varieties that better absorb and utilize nitrogen and combining wheat with legumes.
