Have you ever thought why the capacity of data centers is often measured in megawatts (MW) instead of teraflops that is used for super computers? While teraflops is important for evaluating the computational capabilities of individual hardware components, the overall power consumption is crucial for managing the infrastructure and operational costs of a data center. So, MW provides a more comprehensive view of the energy requirements and sustainability considerations for these facilities. So great news for Finland and a tangible step in green transition. PS. Again a good case how Finnish single price area policy just widens the gap of new production located in North and new consumption in South. More investments in power lines needed.
atNorth announces heat reuse enabled mega site in Kouvola, Finland. FIN04 will have an immediate power supply of 60 MW with the first phase, ready for operation in the second half of 2025 and a path to power to several hundred megawatts when fully built. The site will cater for both colocation customers and build-to-suit projects. FIN04 is located 139KM north-east of Helsinki and will be atNorth’s tenth data center in the Nordics and its fourth campus in Finland. Commenting on the announcement, CEO Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson “This agreement is yet another hallmark moment for atNorth. Kouvola is a critical location for our next site as we continue to expand and meet the growing demand for high performance services. We are in ongoing discussions with several AI companies, hyperscalers as well as international organizations requiring High Performance Computing, who see the clear benefit of moving to the Nordics to decarbonize their IT workloads. True to our vision, we are leading the way in future-proofed data center infrastructure across the Nordics.” Working closely with the city of Kouvola and energy partner, KSS Energia Oy, the new FIN04 site will be enabled with heat reuse capabilities, which will focus on recovering excess heat from the data center to be recycled through the KSS heating plant for reuse within the local community. To enhance Nigeria's digital infrastructure, MTN Nigeria has announced the construction of West Africa's largest data centre. This new facility, a 1,500-rack, Tier 4 data centre, is set to play a pivotal role in meeting the growing data demands and digital needs of businesses and consumers across the country. MTN's Chief Technical Officer, Mohammed Rufai, shared details of this project in a recent interview. Rufai highlighted the critical need for expanded data processing capabilities, driven by significant growth in data usage and the emergence of new services. "We see a high demand in the market, with data usage growing significantly. To cater to this demand and prepare for future growth, we are expanding and modernizing our data centre capacity now. This is to ensure we are ready for expansion at the right time," he explained. The new data centre will support MTN’s infrastructure and serve as a vital resource for businesses across Nigeria. "Businesses that require data centre capacity can now forgo maintaining their server rooms. Our facility will provide the space and services needed, enabling companies to digitalize their operations and improve efficiency," Rufai noted. The data centre will also enhance the delivery of content from major tech companies like Meta and Google, bringing content closer to Nigerian users and improving access speeds. This local hosting of content will significantly boost user experience and network efficiency. The project is not just a technological investment but also a catalyst for economic growth. By providing scalable and adaptable infrastructure, it will enable businesses, particularly MSMEs, to leverage cloud services and other digital solutions. This, in turn, will drive innovation, efficiency, and competitiveness across various sectors of the economy. Rufai emphasized MTN’s readiness to partner with startups and MSMEs, offering numerous opportunities for collaboration, particularly in cloud services. Aligned with MTN’s Ambition 2025 strategy, the data centre signals the company’s commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals. The facility will eventually utilize efficient cooling systems and a combination of traditional energy sources, gas and renewable energy. This will significantly reduce its carbon footprint. Rufai stressed the importance of these measures, noting that "up to 60% of the power consumption of a typical data centre in our clime is for cooling. Our highly efficient systems will ensure we meet our sustainability targets." As Nigeria's digital landscape advances, the new data centre marks a significant milestone. It captures a continued drive for innovation, quality, and growth, fostering a connected, modern life and aiming to provide improved services, economic benefits, and a strong digital infrastructure for the future.

I highlighted the potential for these problems over 3 years ago, grid capacity or lack of, is a problem in all the FLAP'D and COSH markets, the supply chain has to get a grip on their embodied carbon numbers, they need to get them calculated and published ASAP, as for skills, thats a problem that the National Data Centre Academy https://lnkd.in/d5Sm73ip is attempting to solve. We're working with Innovate UK Edge to get the project up and running and we will be releasing information on our approach soon, if in the meantime you'd like more information contact me on [email protected]. The academy is "for the sector, by the sector" to "train tomorrows digital technicians"
https://lnkd.in/ePU_mPfy Interesting read. I like these quotes:- 'Increasing scrutiny being given to the building's embodied carbon, which causes holdups if suppliers are unable to provide sustainability credentials, plus opposition to datacenter developments from local communities can lead to legal disputes that halt construction indefinitely.' and this- 'When it comes to adopting renewable energy sources for datacenters, the lack of relevant skills was again cited as a leading issue, along with the ability of such sources to meet demand and the risks associated with switching.' These quotes highlight two important issues that data centre companies must address, these are supply chain sustainability and value chains that are resilient and ready when needed. Then the social sustainability issue of stakeholder engagement. If data centre providers engage with colleges and other institutions, we can ensure a pipeline of skill rich employees to lead us through the decades ahead. Then lastly there is the broad requirement issue of access to sustainable power, locally being preferable. I think there's a great deal of potential in combined heat and power solutions. There are only so many brownfield sites avaliable, data centre providers must get creative and regulators must create supportive tax breaks for innovative stakeholder led approaches to data centre development and win wins in urban areas. #datacenters #datacentresolutions #esg #esgreporting #sustainabilityreport #cloudcomputing #ppa #renewablepower
