„I worked very closely with Dr. Joern Meissner to plan, design and integrate the proton beam therapy as a part of a major 1.6 million-square-foot campus expansion project for one of Saudi Arabia’s largest and most advanced medical complexes in Riyadh, King Fahad Medical City. The expansion transformed the medical campus into a regional destination for diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitation healthcare services including the addition of a 473,000-square-foot state-of-the-art cancer and proton beam therapy center. The project team was composed of multiple international firms and highly specialized consultants located throughout the United States, India, Europe and Saudi Arabia. Dr. Meissner, fluent in multiple languages, collaborated very successfully and efficiently with all team members of various cultural backgrounds and across many time zones. Despite the geographic distances, Dr. Meissner was consistently available for online and face-to-face meetings and provided expeditions responses to accommodate the project’s aggressive schedule. Dr. Meissner exhibited extensive expertise and experience with this peculiar building type and was critical to the entire planning and design process for a period of several years. Dr. Meissner’s expertise extended well beyond nuclear physics into the architectural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing design associated with the proton beam therapy. His understanding of shielding and regulatory requirements benefited the project tremendously early in the design phase. Dr. Meissner consistently offered creative and cost effective solutions that benefited the project and design progress while reducing the construction cost. He successfully balanced the client’s vision and expectations with the project schedule and regulatory and design requirements and limitations.
