What did civil society and frontline leaders think of the progress made at the recent Bonn Climate Conference? 💭 For Fabrício Muriana, co-founder of Instituto Regenera, it was an important moment to see negotiations on agriculture picking up following the stalemate in discussions at COP28, and meet with Brazilian negotiators. 💭 “The Bonn Climate Conference is not just about technicalities but about geopolitics and power.” said Sena ALOUKA, food sovereignty activist from Togo and Chair of the Climate Change Working Group of AFSA, “For many developing countries and civil society leaders from the Global South this is an important fora to raise our concerns. Food systems need to be higher on the priorities for climate action.” 💭 Proscovier Nnanyonjo Vikman, Chairperson Climate Action Network Uganda, said her highlight was observing the negotiations between the G77 China and the EU and USA, which sometimes grew heated while finding consensus on issues. 💭 Rosinah Mbenya, country coordinator for PELUM, Kenya, was keenly following discussions on gender and protein diversification. Global biodiversity loss & desertification are critical areas that need urgent attention above and beyond all efforts to cut fossil fuel use. Only addressing one of these issues will be meaningless.

Climate and nature are part of the same crisis and we need dedicated and consistent actions to transition away from financing harmful activities towards #NetZero and #NaturePositive initiatives.

Working in sustainability (and food, especially!) is super complex, messy and often non-linear, which can make it frustrating. But I can’t imagine having a different job — what’s the point of creating anything on a planet that’s falling apart? 💭 What's your go-to healthy and sustainable recipe? The recipe that transformed my cooking is this healthy vegan cashew cheese sauce. It’s a rich, creamy and slightly tangy sauce that I’ve used as a foundation for hundreds of dishes. You can turn it into pasta sauces, dressings, dips, etc. Just add different herbs (I love it with cilantro) or spices to change it up. If you have a very good blender, it’s not necessary to soak the cashews beforehand. 💭 The most important thing we need to do to fight the climate crisis is help people envision a climate-friendly future and see themselves thriving in it.
