#Coaches - how do your athletes and players manage "commitment moments?" What is a commitment moment? It's when the athlete's commitment to #training and effort is tested by a moment and an opportunity where an easier path is a possible choice. Example - 5 am - alarm goes - it's time to go to training . Is the level of the #commitment of the athlete GREATER THAN the resistance of the moment, e.g. nice and warm in bed, too early to get up etc. Example - 4 pm - time to go to football practice but there's a new game on XBOX that the player's social group are all playing and enjoying. Is the player's commitment GREATER THAN the resistance of the moment, e.g. playing with friends, hanging out at home online. A committed #athlete - when given the CHOICE of doing things the Easy Way or the Hard Way (i.e. the right way) will CHOOSE the Hard Way!! The forwards, midfielders, and even defenders move as a unit to close down passing lanes and limit the opposition’s options. 2. Trigger Pressing: - Specific triggers, such as a backward pass or a poor first touch, signal the team to initiate the press. Recognizing these moments is crucial for an effective high press. 3. Forcing Play Wide: - The pressing team aims to force the opponent to play the ball wide, where the touchline acts as an extra defender and options become limited. 4. Blocking Passing Lanes: - Players position themselves to block passing lanes, making it difficult for the opposition to play through the press. This often involves cutting off central options and guiding the play towards the flanks. 5. Compact Shape: - Maintaining a compact team shape ensures that players are close enough to support each other, reducing the space the opponent can exploit and increasing the chances of winning the ball back. ### Manchester City’s High Press in a 4-4-2 Formation 1. Strikers Pressing the Center-Backs: - In City’s 4-4-2 setup, the two strikers focus on pressing the opponent’s center-backs. This direct pressure forces the center-backs to make quick decisions, often leading to errors or Long passes. 2. Midfielder Following the Deep-Lying Playmaker: - If an opponent's midfielder drops between the center-backs to collect the ball, one of City’s midfielders steps up to follow him. This prevents the deep-lying playmaker from gaining time and space to distribute the ball effectively. 3. Forcing Play Wide: - The initial pressing action is designed to push the play towards the touchline. By doing so, City limits the opponent’s options and sets up traps along the flanks. - The winger or midfielder who joins the press supports this by positioning themselves to block any potential pass back into the center, ensuring the opponent has fewer options. 4. The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) #MensWorlds begin today in Prague and Ostrava. The biggest annual world championships in team sport, this 2024 edition is looking set to break viewership, attendance and interest records. Both cities have recently hosted in 2004 and 2015, both successful events in their own regard. The 2015 edition currently holds the record for Worlds attendance with 741,690 over the tournament's duration. With a possible total capacity of 895,000 and 27 sellouts already achieved before first puck drop, 2024 is looking likely to break 800,000 spectators. Redefining Performance in Football “Principles are more important than shape and structure.” — Julian Nagelsmann The first question to ask is: What kind of football do we want to play? Football is inherently complex, which is why working within a clear framework is essential. We must first define the game we want to play, as this directly shapes our approach. Football is a continuous process of decision-making. As coaches, we can help players prioritize their options, enabling faster and smarter decisions. By focusing on intentionality, we strengthen the connection between individual players and the team as a whole. Once these fundamental ideas become a shared belief, we can gradually evolve, developing our main principles further. This involves adding complexity in a non-linear way and building a structure that nurtures creativity. Without this structure, creativity lacks the space to thrive. Clear principles make feedback more focused and impactful. As Roberto De Zerbi puts it, “To play good football, you need to have clear principles and the ability to make decisions that align with them. It’s about creating a system where players can interpret and respond to the game fluidly.” Every player has a unique style, but it’s the collective understanding of our principles that binds them together. When giving feedback, we should focus on the player's intent rather than the outcome. A coach who only evaluates outcomes, ignoring intentions, cannot effectively nurture talent. Our job is to create an environment where players are free to make mistakes and learn from them. Developing players involves recognizing potential and guiding its growth. We don’t just coach players; we also coach their minds and their hearts. Fundamentally, physical preparation in football is intertwined with our unique way of playing. Transforming a slow player into a fast one is often a "tall task," limited by their natural attributes. However, we can enhance their thought process and decision-making, making them quicker. This is where cognitive training plays a critical role. Training the brain is just as important as training the body. Through creativity—balancing freedom and discipline—players' perception and intelligence take center stage. Ultimately, the ability to interpret situations within a team concept and make adjustments in the “here and now” is the real measure of performance. 𝗟𝗲𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗯𝗼𝗯𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀... Perhaps afraid of public backlash from their core support, German sports executives seem to hardly exploit the potential of non-price sales promotions, such as adding accompanying concerts and fireworks to the matchday experience or introducing matchday giveaways to increase stadium attendance demand. That's certainly different in Major League Baseball (MLB), where team owners use such promotions on average for about every third match. And there's one giveaway that undoubtedly stands out: Bobbleheads. Yes, you've read this right. 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀! I love bobbleheads. I mean, who doesn't? Right? Here are five things you need to know about MLB bobbleheads. 1️⃣ I'm not an expert, but 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁: Jeffrey Cisyk and Pascal Courty, from whose empirical results I generously draw here. 2️⃣ According to Jeffrey, MLB teams, on average, 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵, and giveaways are relatively common. 3️⃣ You wonder why? Distributing giveaways (e.g., bobbleheads) 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗠𝗟𝗕 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱, on average, by about 10%. 4️⃣ Different strategies exist, and giveaways are not always guaranteed. It's common to distribute giveaways on a 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲, 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘀 or to fans who bought special tickets. 5️⃣ Intriguingly, with bobbleheads, 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗶𝘁 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘄-𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 (𝗶.𝗲., 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆), successfully nurturing demand and, thus, making some decent profit. Why's that? While bobbleheads, which are relatively inexpensive, attract new spectators (ticketing income), both new and existing fans might arrive earlier to matches (e.g., concessions income) to grab their figure.
