    How to get ready to ace every quarter 😎 This post is about OKRs (=Objectives and Key Results), a mgmt framework to structure goals and projects. At WorkMotion, we are absolute OKR fanatics. As a remote company, we need to make sure everyone always works on what matters most. That's what OKRs are about. And making your progress measurable and visible. Yes, OKRs do require a lot of planning. But boy is it worth it. How do we do it? 1. Bottom-up ideation (async) 💡 Department leaders talk to their teams about what they believe the company needs to work on in the upcoming quarter. Then, they provide the input to our Exec Team via a structured survey. 2. SFD ="shitty first draft" (async) 🖍 Based on this input, the Exec Team puts together a "shitty first draft" of all OKRs. This draft is not aligned with capacities yet, so it will likely not be realistic. But it serves as a great starting point. As always, you have to start with sth. 3. OKR workshop (in-person) 🤼 Despite being a remote company, our OKR workshops are always in person. The Exec Team and all department leaders meet to align capacities, finalize the OKR set for the quarter, and assign an owner to each OKR. We have intense discussions, stay focused for 10h each day, and conclude with a team-building activity. These are usually my favorite 2 days of the quarter. Everybody gets ultra-hyped. 4. Breakout sessions (live online) 🧙♂️ These are to iron out the details, scope, KPIs, etc. of each OKR. The owner of each OKR invites only the most relevant team members. This happens within 5 days after the workshop. 5. Kick-off (live online) ⏱ Finally, we're ready to go. The working team kicks of each OKR and gets started with execution. This happens in the 2nd week of the quarter, so they have ~10 weeks to achieve their OKR. 6. Progress tracking (async) 📊 I could write a whole post just about this, as it's one of the biggest benefits of OKRs. Everything is measurable and you can clearly track and report on progress in an async way. My 2 cents: the simpler, the better. We use a GSheet, no fancy tools. Sounds like a lot of admin? Yes, but as a result, we are 100% aligned for a full quarter and no work goes to waste. The video is a snapshot from our in-person workshop in Berlin last week.
