Empowering Youth in Food Systems Transformation 💪🏾 Youth participation in decisions that will shape their futures remains limited. However, the pursuit of food sovereignty—the right of people to healthy and culturally appropriate food, produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods—presents a vital opportunity to involve young people in transforming our failing food systems. 🌱 With their energy and innovation, young people can help make these systems more sustainable, just, and capable of meeting the needs of all, especially the most vulnerable. 🚀 Together with young employees from our team, we are currently at the World Food Forum in Rome, a global platform for the transformation of food systems. This inclusive forum invites people of all generations and backgrounds to become driving forces behind the change the world urgently needs. 🌍 Young people must play an active role in food systems transformation and have the chance to integrate their perspectives into policy to enable just, sustainable food systems for all. 🌾 🗨️ "Youth engagement in policy and decision-making processes must go beyond consultations and making recommendations. Youth must be part and parcel of co-creation and design of food systems strategies and programs," says our colleague Tunsume mwaibasa, Advisor on the Right to Food in Malawi. Hunger ist grausam. 💔 Unser Schirmherr, Bundespräsident Frank-Walter Steinmeier, weiß auch: Hunger hat ganz unterschiedliche Gesichter. Hunderte Millionen Menschen auf der ganzen Welt leiden an stillem Hunger. Obwohl sie keinen leeren Magen haben, mangelt es diesen Menschen an lebenswichtigen Nährstoffen. 🥗 Außerdem überschneiden sich globale Krisen – und treffen die ärmsten Menschen und Länder am härtesten, vor allem in Südasien und in afrikanischen Ländern südlich der Sahara. Frauen und andere marginalisierte Gruppen sind besonders betroffen. 🌍 Gleichzeitig sind es oft Frauen, die den Weg zu einer besseren Zukunft ebnen. So wie Fanta aus Mali: Sie ist eine echte Changemakerin. Früher hat sie Getreide angebaut, aber der Klimawandel erschwert die Ernten. Mit unserem Projekt konnte sie erfolgreich auf den Gemüseanbau umstellen und verkauft Bohnengerichte. Over the past decade, worldwide progress against hunger has slowed to a troubling degree! 📉 🌍 Globally, 733 million people—significantly more than a decade ago—lack access to sufficient calories, and 2.8 billion cannot afford a healthy diet. Acute food insecurity and the risk of famine are on the rise. 👩🏽👧🏾 Women and girls suffer disproportionately from food insecurity and malnutrition, as well as from the effects of extreme weather and climate emergencies. 🌪️ ⚠️ Gender inequality, food insecurity, and climate change are converging to place households, communities, and countries under extreme stress. That is what our GHI-Expert Miriam Wiemers emphasizes emphatically. Progress against hunger has slowed to a troubling degree since 2016. 📊 With the 2️⃣0️⃣3️⃣0️⃣ target date for achieving #ZeroHunger fast approaching, the 2024 Global Hunger Index (GHI) makes it starkly clear: The world is far from meeting that critical goal. 💔 The realization of the right to adequate food is out of reach for billions of people. All four GHI indicators are concerning: ⚫ undernourishment ⚫ child stunting ⚫ child wasting ⚫ child mortality All these metrics fall short of internationally agreed targets. ❌ Many countries and territories are experiencing unprecedented levels of acute food insecurity, with potentially dire implications for their long-term development. 📉 Global crises overlap—and hit the poorest people and countries the hardest. 🌍 Strengthening collaboration in fragile contexts 🌍 Yesterday evening, we had the pleasure of hosting an insightful event focused on the collaboration between Welthungerhilfe (WHH) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH in fragile contexts, under the patronage of (Deutscher Bundestag) German Parliamentary President Bärbel Bas and with the presence of several Members of Parliament. In the face of increasing geopolitical conflicts and crises, our joint work has proven essential. Both organizations are deeply connected with local partners across various countries, developing and implementing innovative solutions to tackle complex challenges. In the various speeches throughout the evening, several key points were emphasized as crucial for success in fragile contexts:  🤝  the importance of local partnerships and truly listening to communities,  🔎 ensuring transparency in our actions,  ⚡ identifying and addressing conflict lines collaboratively,  💯 the need for long-term commitment.  ❗ Moreover, the value of cross-organizational cooperation was highlighted as essential for creating lasting impact. Throughout the evening, we discussed the significance of intertwining humanitarian assistance with international cooperation. Using projects from the Sahel region as an example, we explored how governmental and civil society structures can be strengthened to promote resilience. Hope and Fear—they coexist in Iraq, but resilience prevails. 🌱 Reflecting on Bettina I.'s recent visit to Iraq, where for the past 10 years, Welthungerhilfe has been supporting IDPs, refugees, and host communities with humanitarian assistance and reconstruction, she was impressed by the passion to make a change. 🇮🇶 During her visit, Bettina met with partners, donors, and colleagues. Project participants shared their daily struggles and hopes for a better future, and she witnessed both the challenges and the strength within these communities. In Sinuni, Sinjar, Bettina experienced the duality of hope and fear first hand. The returnees she met from the IDP camps still carry the burden of fear and uncertainty, their futures overshadowed by the trauma of displacement. In contrast, the energy and optimism of the community were palpable at the recent night bazaar. Here, entrepreneurs were building their businesses with passion, their creativity and determination reflecting a future-driven spirit. The positive energy of the bazaar highlighted the resilience of the community. ✨ Iraq continues to struggle with the scars of war, terrorism and the consequences of the climate crisis. Yet Bettina has been struck by how hope continues to thrive alongside fear. From Production to Value Addition in Africa’s Agribusiness Sector 🌍 Africa’s agrifood systems are shifting from raw material cultivation to producing higher-value, nutritious foods due to urbanization and rising middle-class demand. This transformation presents an opportunity to: 🍲 enhance food security 🌾 reduce post-harvest losses 🛠️ create jobs 💵 generate greater economic value To achieve this, targeted investments and policy changes are necessary. However, there are also disadvantages: Many processed foods familiar from the global North are unhealthy, containing too much salt, sugar, and fat. 🥫 In addition to hunger and micronutrient deficiencies, obesity is also a growing problem in many African societies, which in turn is partly due to childhood nutritional stunting. Among other things, expertise is needed, along with better infrastructure and access to reliable and ideally sustainable energy sources, to further process food. How can this be achieved, and how can food processing be promoted to ensure healthy options are available? 🥗 We will discuss this tomorrow at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference. This conference challenges barriers to SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) implementation, while steering momentum with a systemic approach to answer questions such as: How can value chains become climate-friendly and create more value for emerging societies and developing countries? Because, we are running out of time to resolve existential threats such as poverty, hunger and climate change. A Journey of Resilience: How Abdel Halim Builds a New Life 💪🏼 Get to know the powerful story of Abdel Halim Al-Muhammad, a refugee in Türkiye who has overcome severe challenges—financial struggles, an inactive ID, and limited healthcare access for his son. With funding from the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), we provided Abdel with the necessary support, helping him turn a new page. 📖 Abdel Halim’s story represents the impact of our work with refugees and communities affected by the earthquake in Türkiye. Through this project, we were able to support 1️⃣3️⃣0️⃣,0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ individuals directly and extend benefits to another 440,000 people indirectly.
