Swiss Battery Days with VoltStorage! We are glad to see our Head of R&D John Alper being invited to this year’s #SwissBatteryDays.   The conference is jointly organized by Empa, PSI Paul Scherrer Institut, and iBAT Association and will provide a platform for researchers and scientists to exchange and discuss their work on batteries and energy storage.  John will present the latest development status of our #IronSaltBattery on Wednesday, August 28. The Iron Salt Battery is widely regarded to be a key element of the energy transition. Vielen Dank für die Einladung unseres Julian Lechner und die Möglichkeit, über unsere #IronSaltBatterie (ISB) zu sprechen. Mit dieser, auf Long Duration Energy Storage-Anwendungen (#LDES) ausgelegte Batterie, werden erneuerbare Energien grundlastfähig, somit trägt sie entscheidend zur Energiesicherheit bei.      Die Teilnehmenden aus Wissenschaft, Politik und Industrie nutzten die Veranstaltung, um sich zu informieren, auszutauschen und eine noch engere Vernetzung herzustellen. Oft war dabei die Rede von "Kräfte bündeln" - was die Notwendigkeit gemeinsamer Anstrengungen betont, damit Europa im globalen Wettbewerb um Batterietechnologien nicht zurückfällt. Batterien sind eine Grundlagentechnologie, die weit über die Automobilindustrie hinaus wichtig ist. Sie spielen auch eine zentrale Rolle in Bereichen wie Versorgungssicherheit, Stromnetzstabilität, aber auch in weiteren, energieintensiven Branchen. Das Interesse an innovativen Lösungen wie unsere Iron Salt Batterie war daher sehr groß.      Der Kongress war ein voller Erfolg und hat gezeigt, wie wichtig es ist, Kräfte zu bündeln und gemeinsam an neue Batterietechnologien zu arbeiten. Ein großes Dankeschön an die Organisatoren und Applaus für eine so wichtige Veranstaltung!!

🌟 Exciting LDES developments are coming up! The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has launched an initiative to procure over 2GW of long-duration energy storage, targeting durations from 12 hours to multi-day. This strategic move aims to advance technologies vital for decarbonization but not yet widely adopted by load-serving entities (LSEs, i.e., utilities).   At VoltStorage, our #IronSaltBattery technology is perfectly aligned with California's goals, offering a sustainable solution that can significantly contribute to these decarbonization efforts.   As we also saw earlier governmental energy programs in other countries – take Germany’s #Kraftwerksstrategie which is much less bold and supportive to LDES solutions - this initiative should serve as a template for other forward-thinking governing bodies. It emphasizes both the importance of diversifying energy storage technologies and thinking ahead to enhance long-term energy security and independence by supporting emerging technologies journey down the cost curve towards scaled production.   California's proactive approach, in part shaped by Long Duration Energy Storage Council (LDES Council) members comments, provides a vital starting ramp for emerging technologies to scale up and reduce costs. Energy for Education – Education in Energy! This wordplay highlights the dynamic interplay between enthusiasm for learning and the critical knowledge of our energy system. This was impressively demonstrated during the visit of a project group from the Luitpold-Gymnasium in Munich to our office. As part of the school's annual project days – this time focused on all things related to the future – energy was a key topic: What types of energy exist, where does it come from, how should we manage it, and much more. As a young, innovative company, we at VoltStorage are at the forefront of battery technology, working on the sustainable energy supply of tomorrow. So, it was only natural for the organizers to approach us for the opportunity to complement theoretical knowledge with exciting practical insights. We successfully completed another crucial development phase and can now progress to an advanced stage of product definition and demonstration. A new meaning of “Long Duration Energy” - this is what could be witnessed at this year´s #B2Run in Munich.  We are extremely proud to have sent a team of almost 25 runners – 1/3 of our total staff – to one of the city´s biggest sports events. Everyone gave his/her best effort to make it to the finish line. And yes, everyone was running with, and also running for long duration energy – a motivation that drives us all.  A big applause to the team, our fastest finishers and everyone who attended and supported it! #motivation #LongDurationEnergyStorage #innovation #performance 

Unsere Meinung zur Kraftwerksstrategie: das reicht nicht. Letzte Woche wurden wichtige Eckpunkte zur Kraftwerksstrategie veröffentlicht, darunter auch der Ausbau von Langzeitspeichern im Umfang von 0,5 GW zur Unterstützung von Gaskraftwerken. Damit soll das Stromnetz in Zeiten von Dunkelflauten mit wenig Sonne oder Wind stabilisiert und die Versorgungssicherheit gewährleistet werden. Angesichts des mittel- bis langfristigen Ziels der Klimaneutralität bis 2045 und der Notwendigkeit, wesentlich mehr Erneuerbare Energien ans Netz zu bringen, erscheinen 0,5 GW jedoch stark unterdimensioniert. 0,5 GW entsprechen ungefähr 1/8 der im letzten Jahr insgesamt zugebauten Speicherleistung. Wenn diese Zahl im Vergleich zu den geplanten zusätzlichen 10 GW bei Gaskraftwerken steht, wird das Dilemma noch deutlicher: Anstatt einen Technologie-offenen Kapazitätsmarkt zu schaffen, wo sich die besten, preiswertesten und CO2 ärmsten Technologien durchsetzen können, werden weiterhin auf Jahre hinweg Gaskraftwerke gefördert und die fossile Abhängigkeit zementiert.
