Safety is and will remain a top priority at Volocopter. For over ten years, we have shared multiple behind-the-scenes of our #VoloCity aircraft tests in the air. Today, we’re using the opportunity to share a glimpse of our tests on the ground – from a fisheye perspective, inside our #VoloCity aircraft! Here, you can see our test pilot, Olivier RENARD, evaluating aircraft systems – detail-checking and putting newly installed systems to the test. In addition to flight tests, ground tests are an integral part of our type certification milestone with EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency and enable us to ensure compliance with #aviation standards and regulations for safe flight. We enjoy a good challenge at Volocopter, and performing HIRF Testing is one! Last month, we completed High-Level High-Intensity Radiated Field (HIRF) testing on our VoloCity aircraft following test requirements outlined in EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency’s SC-VTOL certification basis. This makes Volocopter one of the first #eVTOL players in the world to perform such testing. But why is this test important? Aircraft-level HIRF testing ensures the protection of electric and electronic equipment of the #VoloCity from radiated fields generated from emitters such as television broadcast transmitters, commercial radio antennas, radar systems, and more – knowing these fields may cause aircraft systems to operate erroneously. As such, HIRF testing on the VoloCity is crucial for our certification milestone with EASA and for ensuring safe and swift flights in cities worldwide. How do you simultaneously develop safe aircraft and corresponding guidelines for a completely new technology like #eVTOL? The answer: through a shared vision, continuous knowledge exchange, and critical thinking. Without transparent and open communication between regulatory bodies such as EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency and industry pioneers like Volocopter, this would be impossible. For example, last year EASA defined noise standards for VTOLs, using technological input and data gathered through our prototype test flights. These guidelines outlined not only the acceptable noise levels that VTOL should have, but also how to standardize the measurement so it is adapted to VTOL #aircraft characteristics and aligned within the industry. This mutual exchange goes far beyond noise specifications and, thanks to pioneers like EASA and Volocopter, it ultimately benefits an entire industry!

When we describe our aircraft, the word "safety" immediately comes to mind. However, the phrase "10-9" may not ring a bell for many! It is the safety standard level in aviation at which we will certify our #VoloCity aircraft. It means that the VoloCity can only have one critical failure in a billion flight hours – a prerequisite by EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency to ensure our aircraft is one of the safest modes of transport to currently exist. How safe? Once certified, our VoloCity will be as safe as a commercial airliner. Last week, we attended the ‘CAAC-EASA Aviation Safety Conference’ in Xiamen, China. The discussions revolved around the collaboration between CAAC - Civil Aviation Administration of China and EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency in all manners of aviation. We were left in awe of how fast and far things progressed, particularly on the shared goal of enabling safe and sustainable #InnovativeAirMobility. As Volocopter, we are eager to continue supporting such efforts and look forward to future opportunities to engage with aviation professionals from all over the world!
